So have sponsors fallen out of love with football if it’s a tough market as described?

Whilst entertainment companies and restaurants are struggling as people have less disposable income these weren’t the companies that have historically sponsored football teams (car manufacturers, technology companies, betting companies).

Other companies selling essentials are raking in super profits like energy producers, supermarkets and utilities though I guess SHELL or Exxon doesn’t need to advertise their wares.

For such a big global brand such as the premier league its strange clubs are struggling to find good sponsorship deals not withstanding the pressure on household finances.

It's a risk for companies to sponsor companies outside the big 5. Who would want to be associate with Burnley, West Ham or Tottenham last season?

It’s a buyers market. Front of shirt gambling sponsors inflated the fees clubs could command. Now they’re banned. That’s 11 Premier League clubs hunting for new sponsors. There’ll be very few getting substantially more money from their new partnerships.

For those getting upset about the deal

Is it £20m p/a FOS + £6m training ground?  Or £20m p/a for both?

edit: £26m/year average.  Not bad in the current market - definitely good that we’ve finally sorted the training sponsorship.  More or less keeps us where we were.

Maybe they are just seeing it as not worth it. Do the big sponsors really benefit? Just looking at our own sponsors over the years...did anyone decide to use Virgin Money just because it was on the shirt? Fun88...anyone use it? Wonga...less said the better. SELA....I now know they exist and have something to do with events but that's about it. Never heard of KNOX or seen it on sale anywhere.

Then theres the generally creeping ban/taboo on things that are allowed...no more booze sponsors, no tobacco (not so much in football, but certainly F1), payday lenders...not sure if banned, but at least frowned on, upcoming restrictions on gambling sites.

That pretty much leaves massive companies that don't really need to advertise, or obscure ones that havent the cash to offer big amounts

I think it's a lot simpler. Front of shirt has become, in recent years especially, a very expensive investment. The front of shirt market in the Premier League in particular has partially been held up by gambling firms. This year is the first year with a ban on gambling front of shirt, so you're seeing the market deflate as those firms exit. There's also the truth that non-European football and non-London teams will be hit hardest. Non-European football is obvious in that you get fewer matches and less global visibility. The London thing is the fact that getting a premium box that comes with front of shirt is very, very nice perk and can certainly grease the wheels of a deal. You might have certain executives who may be more keen on the deal on the basis they know they'll be able to scoop some good tickets for work contacts, friends and family - the truth is unless you're a North East business, that doesn't hold the same attraction.
