Fenham Mag
In 2006, Smith moved to Vancouver to undertake a year-long secondment to research the biomechanics of goalkeeping and during this time he worked as a consultant to the Canadian Soccer Association. madras
He'd better not bring that sodding dancing bear to training!
captainhaircut
If this is the guy who taught Shay Given how to distribute the ball, don't expect Krul to improve. He improved him considerably. Given went from a keeper whose kicking was embarrassing to a very passable kicker of the ball who actually picked out Shearers head consistently. AyeDubbleYoo
At that training thing, at the moment, good to see they are doing a lot of work on passing They've got nearly five years of avoiding the ball to make up for.

DJ_NUFC
With what has transpired so far, especially on Monday, I wonder what Cathro makes of all this. Defensive tactics, afraid to attack, scared to play Perez, De Jong, Aarons, etc. Surely as a well-regarded, young, up and coming coach who honed his skills in Valencia at the top level in Spain, he would have a different approach? Question is, how much is he listened to, or how long until Steve is moved upstairs and we finally have an exciting young manager in charge, if and when they choose to give him the reins? AyeDubbleYoo
I'm not sure our tactics were that defensive, the fullbacks were pushed on and we had 4 attackers. We were just bad.
Dr.Spaceman
Aye, not scoring goals does not automatically equal defensive tactics. We were just shit all over the pitch.

DJ_NUFC
Aye, not scoring goals does not automatically equal defensive tactics. We were just shit all over the pitch. Not pressing your opponents or showing any desire to play "front foot, fret-laden" football might not equal a defensive tactic, but does equal a distinct lack of opportunism, and a defeatist mentality. A young coach should not stand for that, if he had more of a say. I would at least be in Steve's ear about what's not working, and not picking the right players. Even without pressing your opponents, if you are playing a defensive counter attacking game, the idea should be to hit back quickly once you have possession. When we get it, the movement and tempo is too slow and as a result we end up passing sideways or backwards.

LooneyToonArmy
was listening to the Spanish La Liga podcast earlier with Sid Lowe (Guardian / AS Spain correspondent) and apparently one of the theories why Valencia have been struggling so far has been the loss / influence of Cathro. Was very highly rated there.....Though I'm not sure if Phil Neville coming in as his replacement has anything to do with their struggles

All those new faces will take some time to gel. We can only hope that Cathro had a big hand to play in the great organisation and discipline they had last year - a sort of poor man's Atlético. It's a bit interesting than many of Valencia's fans aren't 100% sold on Nuno Espírito Santo, despite the success they've had with him.
