Cant believe anyone thinking finishing second is beneficial. If we lose tonight and finish second, we aren't winning this cup. I'm sure i read the last 15 winners all topped their groups.

You can't believe that people would prefer to play Japan, Switzerland/Sweden over Columbia, Brazil/Mexico?

I don't think anyone's thinking about England winning, just going the furthest. Surely you can understand both perspectives?

I just thought people wanted to win it. My bad.

The path of finishing 2nd also makes that possibility much easier, i don't think it's impossible to win it with enough luck and quality personally as nobody really looks good.

Spain to me look the best team so far despite results not looking that great, their football has been at times exceptional - and they would cause England's defence all kinds of problems. IIRC, finishing top of the group would avoid Spain, for a short while at least. Get the job done, lads.

Rumoured Belgium line up is so weak (compared their their main starting 11). They have the right idea, good for them.

They'll get to the final and Southgate will be sat at home rocking slowly "but the momentum"

Isn't Tielemans a DM?

Changed things a little bit with the way the other group has fallen. I'd far, far rather play Japan in the last 16 than Colombia.

Was thinking exactly the same. It's all well and good getting an easier QF draw but we'd have to get there first, and I could very easily see Colombia knocking us out.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;

Or close the wall up with our English dead (tinnies)

In group G there's nothing so becomes a man

As modest Gareth and humility:

But when the blast of war blows in our ears,

Then imitate the action of the Trippier;

Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,

Disguise fair nature with Vard-flavor'd rage;

Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;

Let pry through the portage of the head

Like the class Rashford; let the brow o'erwhelm it

As fearfully as doth a galled rock

O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,

Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.

Now set the teeth and stretch the Belgians wide,

Hold hard the ale-breath and bend up every spirit

To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.

Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!

Fathers that, like so many Alexander Oxlaide-Chamberlains

Have in these parts from morn till even fought

And sheathed their swords for lack of VAargument:

Dishonour not your mothers; now attest

That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.

Be copy now to men of grosser blood,

And teach them how to score. And you, good Jordan

Whose limbs were made in England, show us here

The mettle of your pasture; let us swear

That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;

For there is none of you so mean and base,

(Apart from Delli Alli) That hath not an acceptable 0-0 in your eyes.

I see you stand like Romford greyhounds in the slips,

Straining upon the start. The game's afooty:

Follow your spirit, and upon this charge

Cry 'God for both Harry's England, and Saint George!'
