Just interested in what you folks think about Carsley looking back over his tenure?

Thought it was some of the best stuff I've personally seen from England in ages and he got really good performances from a variety of players.

Do you think there's any chance you regret not giving him more of a chance?

I thought he was very good and the football was fantastic.

But the best thing was his willingness to bring some fresh faces in and how well they adapted.

He also won tournaments at the under 21 level too right? Going up against decent teams in finals?

Be interesting to see what he ends up doing next. Seems to have something about him.

I would’ve given him the main job but he seemed to lack the desire for it.

Had occurred to me that his U21 position might be under threat now he’s shown that he’s not willing to step up to the senior job at any point.

But I don’t know what discussions have been had obvs.

He seems an active coach who likes to make changes and try things, which I think fans generally appreciate.

Bar the Greece debacle. The football has genuinely been decent, the team looks more balanced and some actual decent passing moves.

I have enjoyed seeing new faces get a chance, plenty have been forced upon him, mind. But the team has still seemed more connected as a unit than under Southgate. I like that youngsters and less fashionable names have got a chance. Jones was fantastic the last two games for example. Gallagher was also very good Last night.

Probably biased as Gordon has always featured, then Hall and Tino. But I have rarely bothered with England games outside of the summer tournaments for 10 years or more. I actually paid an interest to the games under Carsley.

My interest in the national team has definitely spiked with our players getting called up more.

Article in the Athletic had a few damning stats.

In the Mike Ashley era only four players won an England cap whilst playing for Newcastle. Owen, Smith, Carroll and Townsend.

Townsend was the last of those (2016 vs Oz at the SoL) until Trippier got called up in ‘22.

Until Pope, Trips and Wilson were called up for a Newcastle player hadn’t went to a major tournament with England since 2006 (Owen).

The only academy graduates to get a cap in the Premier League era whilst at the club are Howey and Carroll.

Now we have Trips, Pope, Hall, Livramento, Wilson and Gordon all win caps playing here since the takeover. You suspect Barnes may have a chance to win a few more and Miley should be there in the years to come. Quite the turnaround!

They should rethink these qualification groups. Seem pointless.

For the top nations it is a bit of a formality, but with the Nations League and the second spot play-off, these qualification campaigns are massive for the second rung of national sides, like Albania for instance have a great chance of potentially making it to the play-off round, to have a one off match to qualify for the World Cup, for the first time in their history.

What would Tuchels first England squad look like:

GK: Pickford, Henderson, Ramsdale

RB: Livramento, Alexander-Arnold

LB: Hall, Davis

CB: Stones, Colwill, Branthwaite, Guehi

CM: Jones, Rice, Bellingham, Mainoo. Palmer, Foden

LW: Gordon, Rogers

ST: Kane, Solanke, Delap

RW: Saka, Bowen

Yikes.

Like Robson, he gets one for not winning things for England but getting close and therefore that’s almost the same.

For me the only high status person in English football who springs to mind who should be knighted is Marcus Rashford, but he’s not currently playing very well, so obviously he can’t be considered.  He actually did something which wasn’t him just doing his job and arguably not doing it as well as someone else could have, unlike Southgate.

Considering he’s only in job for 18 months to win, I think there’ll be some experience in there. Fully expect one of (if not both) Walker and Trippier in the squad. Probably some far left CM option too, as all the ones listed, none you want playing deepest if you are to get the best out of each one.

With Bowen and Saka injured before first squad, if Murphy keeps up form, I think there’s a genuine chance he gets called up.

The difference with Robson is that he was knighted at 69 having had a career that took him to manage some of the biggest clubs in Europe across a managerial career spanning close to 40 years.

Southgate, on the other hand...
