Georginio Wijnaldum

Swedish pundit Erik Niva on the goal: "Obertan hits his best cross since coming to England, and Wijnaldum comes from the midfield to head it in like he was Jackie Milburn himself in front of the Gallowgate End"  Watched the goal at least ten times already since the game, it's such a great goal :aww:

Would love to see this guy player deeper next to a proper anchor man.

From memory, while doing the rounds of interviews at transfer time, I recall Gini saying he'd play anywhere but really wanted to play a central attacking role, and thought this was his best position. Apparently SMc, whilst managing in Holland, thought Siem de Jong was the best player in the league: he also played the central attacking role ('no.10' ish). Given SMc has also been quoted as wanting to give Sissoko a more fluid/roaming role, it'll be interested to see how he fits them in/keeps,them happy when de Jong is 100%, particularly if, as many expect,  Aarons claims the wide left role as his own, as the season progresses. Not to mention the option of Perez as second striker. Whilst Sissoko on form is a beast of a player, I could see him /club accepting a good offer--especially if it meant  getting a more specialist wide right player, and or balancing the books re new centre back.

I actually think our most dynamic and potent team will be 1 of Cisse/Mitrovic with Aarons & Sissoko wide, Perez as the second striker, Gini playing a box-to-box but emphasis on the attacking box.

Highly technical, scary pace on the counter attack, goals from potentially 5 of them as well.

McClaren really seems to rate Sissoko, which is no surprise since he's one of our best players by a long way. I think it will take big money to tempt us to sell as I expect him to look a much better player this season if today is anything to go by. Wijnaldum definitely looks like he is going to be the best player for the attacking central midfield role, I don't see why you would waste him in a deeper role when we already have so many other players who can do that role. Drop Colback and play De Jong instead. You don't need both Colback and Anita in the same midfield.

This sounds good to me, as I've mentioned though we really could do with a proper holding player who can pass it a bit to pull this off in my opinion.

Erik Niva is good.

Aye, he's great IMO.

Erik Niva is god.

Is this for real? The guy knows absolutely nothing about the game of football. He might be a great journalist in terms of history and stories. Not going to take that away from him, but his own views are always terrible. Never kicked a ball in his life.

I actually think we already have that player in Mehdi Abeid, who has the physicality to muscle people off the ball, has the pace to get across the pitch and cover, and has a decent pass on him and is fairly technical as well. Absolute shame if he's flogged, he's far quicker in the pass than Tiote has EVER been.

Regarding Abeid I believe he was originally an attacking midfielder as well but as you said he has the physicality and athletic ability which we badly lack in central midfield.

Can he trusted to sit and hold though? I have no doubts he'd be good plating out from the back.

I think he deserves a shot, but does the coaching staff agree?
