Ritchie
The last time he was dropped he came back stronger as a result. I really don't see why it's such a big deal for managers to drop their captain when they aren't playing well.

He's not been the better of the two centre halves but I don't think he was 'bad' earlier in the season. He's going through a bad period now, which also coincides with pretty much everyone else. When players have bad periods, they get called crap, it's pretty much par for the course. If you play poorly for an extended period of time, people will lose faith, it's inevitable. What exactly do you expect? He's not the only one being criticised right now. Either way, it's not a death sentence. People ended up appreciating Nicky fucking Butt. So I think the "You're not allowed to have a bad period as a Newcastle player" statement is a tad hyperbolic.
nufc4eva
He's been decent most games tbf, few howlers but not as bad as people make out like. Tries too much if anything, but good in the air and generally keeps it simple on the floor Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

So I think the "You're not allowed to have a bad period as a Newcastle player" statement is a tad hyperbolic. I don't think it is, it happens time and time again. Think back to Christmas when Richie wasn't in great form, loads of shite written about him. He had one bad game the other day and stifler was straight on his back - that was stifler though to be fair. Jesus, look at some of the stuff that's been written about benitez the last couple of weeks. Maybe it happens at all clubs but always tend to feel we jump on people pretty quickly. Greg
generally keeps it simple on the floor Hasn't done so second half of the season and constantly gives the ball away trying to be more than he is capable. If he can cut this out and keep his game simple and within his limitation he can be a decent player.
Dokko
If we have two other fit centre backs I wouldn't play him for the rest of the season. Mentally he's shot, big weight on his young shoulders and he's struggling with the pressure, especially when it's crunch time and especially when it's going wrong. He needs to concentrate on his own game and relinquish the captaincy next season, but we need to bring in someone no one can have doubt about. Altamullan
I'm not his greatest fan and have never thought he should be club captain. However, although most people have noticed poor form recently it is easy for this recent 'frustration' to bias a fair take on his season. I can't recall how many, but I do recall 'man if the match' performances. He's scored 3 goals (same as Diame). Whoscored.com show him as having the sixth highest player ratings in our squad (above Gayle... But below Clark and, interestingly, Mbemba). Dummett comes in at no.9, btw. Colback is top.... not really; but he is 17th. https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/23/Show/England-Newcastle-United
joeyt
Sadly two of his three goals are sort of cancelled out by his own incompetence at the other end in those games

Figures 1-0 Football
He started the season well, and IIRC he and Clark were immense during our winning run. He seems to have gradually dropped off as the season has gone along, has he ever played a full season? I think I recall him being in/out of the team at Forest but I may be wrong. Maybe he's just knackered, mentally and physically. It's hard work playing a 46 game season, especially when you're the captain, especially when you're the captain of the biggest club in the league with huge expectations of getting out of it. DJ_NUFC
It's becoming a witch-burning session, this thread. He did actually have a decent run in the side alongside Clark during our best runs this year, but he's also been poor and dropped many clangers. One doesn't negate the other. He was dropped for the third league game of the season. He's right though, generally he was better in the first half of the season, there was the odd dodgy game but he also played very well in a lot of them. In the run in his mistakes are becoming more costly. I just wonder whether he needs some time out if the pressure is getting to him. Not sure what to make of him at the moment, sometimes he looks a million dollars and you think there's a potential star in there, other times he just looks like a fish out of water. It makes me nervous relying on him for the crunch games this season though. Would much rather see him taken out of the firing line and develop his game when there's less pressure on. He started the season poorly, he was probably at fault for both goals we let in against Huddersfield and was dropped which gave him a kick up the arse. The same thing should happened weeks ago. Dave
I feel quite bad criticising both Lascelles and Darlow, I think there are good players in both of them. Been iffy a couple too many times this season I guess, but there aren't many in our squad that have been flawless throughout a long season. They've played a shitload of matches in different circumstances and under the great pressure that comes with an NUFC shirt, it's inevitable things will go wrong at some point. Whether they're good enough to play for us in the Premier League I'm still not sure.

We have far more important players to get rid of before those two if we do go up, which I'm still sure that we will.
Dave
I only saw the second half but his kicking in particular was awful, really nervous. The crowd slaughtered him.
