You could argue that he lost his man for the goal but I actually think Anita's played his role the best so far tonight.

There was so much other collective shit happening during the goal that you can hardly blame Anita solely for their goal.

I'm not.

I know Yorkie, speaking to the lot on here as a whole.  :rose:

After losing out in the challenge Wijnaldum just stood and watched the ball, and so reacted way too late to Payet's presence. Anita's being singled out on NBC as he was closest to Payet originally but at least he tried to do something. Just bad defending all round.

yeah just watched it again on sky, the ball broke into anitas area and he went towards it but didn't win it, don't think he couldn't react, but in doing so he did lose his - that should have been covered by wijnaldum though, no doubt about it

Mbemba was getting frustrated with no-one to pass to a lot of the time, forced to play back or hit it long.

Something's seriously wrong with the way this midfield is set up. Not hard to spot what it is either.

That was pretty shit and yet, we really should be level. Janmaat has to score that (or leave it for Wijnaldum). No reason we can't get at least a point out of this game, but McClaren needs to make some changes.

They're nowt special and the game in general has been low on quality. If even get going a little bit we could come out with something.

Then again, so could they.

Anita/Colback offer nothing like, absolutely nothing. They don't contribute, they don't protect, they're easily dominated by every other CM we face and are always goal-side and get pulled all over the shop. It needs to change, either personnel or formation or both because this isn't working Stevie, it's fucking pigshit.

Anita and Colback will never dominate a midfield. They might use some guile or neat passing to move things on (Anita more than Colback) but pairing them together in the middle is proving a disaster. They could work if they are paired with a big strong player doing the physical bit for them, but are useless without that.

Every team will be targeting these too. And while Tiote at his best could be a good foil for them, I doubt we ever see that Tiote again.

so we sacrifice threat for their protection- that they dont give anyway- what a plan.

Exactly. We play 7 men who are largely there to defend the goal and we still concede regularly. Change it ffs.

Anita wasn't the only one at fault for the goal. Janmaat - not for the first time - panicked and Wijnaldum (who has looked out of sorts tonight) made a very tentative challenge.

But we seem to lack any kind of presence when the ball breaks around the centre and edge of either penalty area. Those are the situations where you expect a midfield anchorman to intervene with a clearance / tackle, or a shot / pass, and it just doesn't happen. It's not just been a problem in this game.
