huss9
should offer £1m for the loan, £13.5m in the summer. compromise.
Parsley
Its clearly on our end. We always walk away from hardballing over a few million. Its defined all our failures in the transfer market so its only apt it happens yet again. Particularly so on this occasion IMO; I reckon Ashley's too proud to concede making a net loss on Townsend. number9shirt
It's nice to see what I thought was clearly a joke has provoked quite the response. I should've guessed things get a little tense around deadline day.
Dave
Failing to get Townsend is the exact definition of failing to back Benitez. If the manager wants him, and the club are truly confident in both his ability to take us up and his judgement on the player then they should make it happen. A £2m loan fee might be a bitter pill to swallow, but then we shouldn't have got fucking relegated in the first place should we. It'll be a lot more costly if the manager decides these cunts are still as bad as Keegan said.

Sir Toon
Surely it cant be as straight forward as not giving Rafa enough sweets out the jar as that Karanka at Middlesboro looked narked earlier and the owner there will be as desperate as anyone to stay up. Just shows it's a tough window with dodgy inflated egos

Sir Toon
Interesting that Sky are now reporting that Mbemba wouldn't be part of the Townsend deal and could be a separate deal altogether. Sounds more like a permanent then.

He was backed appropriately in the Summer, as the 6 point gap shows.
Hanshithispantz
Villa needed to buy and have signed Lansbury, Hourihane and Bjarnason and Bree. There's really no excuse for us not signing anyone like.

If we miss out on Townsend for the sole reason that we wouldn't pay £2m to get him on loan, it'll obviously be very frustrating and be very typical of the board we've come to know. It would be a worry going into the summer. But if Rafa lost his shit I think it would be an overreaction given the context of the whole situation. And we don't need to buy in the same way Villa do, no way.
xLiaaamx
None of those players would be convincing for us. I wouldn't have minded Cairney but Fulham would never sell

But the window isn't so tense that you cannot sign players if you want to (hence Villa signing starters from 2 rivals). And all evidence suggests Benitez wanted to sign atleast a couple of players. Figures 1-0 Football
If Rafa wasn't being backed then we'd never have signed Murphy or Gamez. Rafa himself has stressed several times that he only wants to bring people in if they will improve the squad and be able to step up next season, the lack of signings is probably indicative of the fact that players are unwilling to drop into the Championship or are not available for sale. It's quite a slow window this January anyway as is evidenced in the fact that 7 PL teams haven't made a single signing yet. Usually incomings mean outgoings, teams wont be willing to let players go unless they have a replacement ready to bring in. We're possibly struggling to buy because clubs cannot replace the players we want. Rafa wouldn't be walking out at SJP on Wednesday if Ashley had gone back on his word and as Ian correctly said earlier, there is no point worrying over something that may never happen. Teasy
Townsend may not want to commit to it. Then that's the end of that I'd say. Just a suggestion, who knows, but IF that was the case I'd say he can go and f*** himself to be honest. I agree if it is but all the reports have suggested that he is keen to come - everything points to the fact that Ashley has a new crane to lift him back up and is trying to play football manager again - we will see but I will be very surprised if anyone comes in by tomorrow of any stature. If he was keen to come why would we not just pay the £13m and get the deal done? If there's a loan fee which we don't want to pay then that would suggest it's Townsend that wants it to be a loan deal initially. I reckon it's us who won't commit to the £13m and want a loan in case we don't go up. While we all think we'll go up i suppose paying £13m and getting a player in on Premiership wages would be a risk, if we then didn't go up. Good point. Weren't earlier reports saying it was Townsend who wanted the loan first?

Andy84
Hopefully we are just finalising bits like clauses in his contract in case we fail to go up, payment structure etc and everything will be okay tomorrow Don't think I can be arsed with the Total and utter meltdown there will be. Bimpy474
SSN news just said Mbemba is now not part of the deal but a deal on it's own. Didn't say if it was a loan or buy for Mbemba though.
