There’s a story about Alan Pardew that you’ll probably know, but it’s absolutely worth recounting here if you aren’t aware of it. And, indeed, if you are. The tale comes from Pardew’s West Ham days, told by former club photographer Steve Bacon, who claimed that one day the coaching staff were sitting down for dinner. When their food arrived, the story goes that Pardew took one look at fitness coach Tony Strudwick’s dinner, decided that looked better than his choice, so just took it. In response protests from everyone present, Pardew simply responded: “When you’re the king, you can do anything.”

This paragraph rung a bell so I edited it a little:

It would also be foolish to overlook Pardew’s own role in Palace’s demise. Wickham’s Cisse's struggles up front are hardly assisted by the questionable tactic of playing the ball long to him, thus bypassing the wingers, Palace’s greatest hope of creativity. It leads to those wingers dropping deep to demand the ball, thus leaving said lone striker isolated and helpless. Wilfried Zaha Hatem Ben Arfa typically has to beat two or three opponents before reaching the penalty area.

The comment below the article is spot-on:

The biggest problem that Pardew has is that when the going gets tough, he's so fantastically unlikeable that no-one really wants to see him turn things around. Watching him fail just feels better, somehow

Crystal Palace went into the FA Cup final as the underdogs, the neutral's favourite - but after that excruciating touchline dance, even the staunchest ABU must have been cheering for the opposition. That's Pardew in a nutshell

I'm pretty sure even the commentators said that at the time.

Incredible stuff. Pardew hatred could unify the country.

I'd vote for Trump if Pardew was on his shitlist tbh.

The Benteke signing is quite a smart one for his favoured formation of nine defenders humping it long towards a big man and another striker parked out on the wing. He's not going to score many goals but he'll probably contribute enough to avoid relegation. Maybe.

Benteke is shit in the build-up play.  Pardew likes to play to his strikers and then out to the wing.  That wont suit Benteke.

He's big though, so combined with Townsend on set pieces they might just sneak enough goals between them to stay up. Classic Pardew really.

If theres something Pardew relies on its a striker and hes always had someone to save his skin. Tevez at West Ham, Bent at Charlton, Lambert at Southampton, Ba, Cisse and Remy here and got a feeling Benteke will be decent at Palace.
