Rafa: I am fully committed

 

Rafa was pressed by it on Dave Jones at Sky.

 

“It’s very difficult (for me to walk away). My Chinese is not good enough. “No I try to do my best now. It has to be something you cannot control. At the moment I am fully commited to do the best that I can do now.

He's staying then.

 

No doubt the papers will still be full of him leaving since he mentioned China. He done the same at the talk in, said he wouldnt really like China but they're offering mega money.

 

Next Summer is the test if we stay up, he'll want seriously backed and things done quickly.

Hard to take any positives from that interview tbh, he's clearly still angry and annoyed with the club, seems to me with him saying we are still trying, that he will see out the transfer window and make his decision based on that.

Was clearly unhappy with the market. Was talking about how a £25m striker isn't a £25m striker with everything all-in.

 

He said Ake (didnt name him, but said player who went to Bournemouth from Chelsea) cost £25m total once "commission" had been paid, as we were looking at him. £20m fee, £5m in commission...then wages.

Imagine if Dave Jones hadn't pushed him on the 'if I decide to stay' line though. Meltdown. Shows why we shouldn't latch on to his quotes either way because sometimes there is a language thing.

He said, 'if I decide to stay', but was talking in the past tense. Jones pulled him up on it then he said something like, 'yes I decide to stay etc'. Was just a language thing.

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez spoke about the club's return to the top flight live on Sky this morning - and his future

 

 

It was Premier League launch day in London and Newcastle played a huge part in a day when top flight rights holders were granted access to celebrate the return of one of the most exciting leagues in the world.

 

Rafa Benitez , Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie were Newcastle’s representatives – with the Newcastle boss speaking live on Sky Sports on Wednesday morning to preview the start of United’s return to the top flight.

Newcastle are one of the teams featured in the first weekend of the season’s live games, with United’s home match against last season’s runners-up Tottenham on Sky on Sunday. Benitez has been frustrated by some of United’s activity in the transfer market so far but he is looking forward to the big kick-off against Spurs.

 

This morning he spoke of the potential struggle for Newcastle as they head into a return to the Premier League following their Championship title win – and also about the supporters and how they can help Newcastle in what is going to be a difficult season.

 

He spoke live to Sky’s David Jones on Sky, taking questions about transfers, United’s expectations and what will happen next season. Here are some of the highlights of the interview.

 

Rafa on improving from last season:

 

“The Championship is quite complicated but we did well. The teams, the fans, the city were together and that was crucial for us.

 

“We had good players. The fans, we had 52,000 fans every game at home and especially the fans away - everyone was pushing. The staff, the club - everyone was trying to achieve what we wanted to achieve. Only 33% of teams go back up first season, it’s quite complicated. If you don’t go up, it’s even more difficult because there is more pressure.

 

Rafa on the team - and trying to improve it:

 

“The team is fine. Still we can improve - every manager wants to improve. But we have a good team and we’ll see if we can improve the squad a little bit. The Premier League is a massive challenge, it’s another level.

 

“It’s very hard. The prices are crazy. We missed some targets at the beginning and I think we are paying for that but hopefully we can find solutions to bring what we need. Sometimes it’s not what you want, it’s what you need and what you can afford now.

 

“It’s quite difficult for every team but especially the ones that do not have as much money as the others. The teams at the top have put the prices so high that if you go for average players they ask for big money, big commission, big wages. Everything is more difficult.

 

“Somtimes you have to sign what you can. Then it’s a tricky question because if you sign players people will say ‘Is it the player you wanted?’ Maybe it’s the fifth on the list but he’s still your player and you have to support him and make sure he’s good enough.

 

“We are trying to do our business.”

 

Rafa on his future:

“The story is as I said before we missed some targets at the beginning and now we are trying to do our best with what’s available.

 

“I can read our fans saying ‘Listen, now will sign a £25million striker’. We cannot. Sometimes they are not available. But if they are available the price is not £20million, the wages are not the same, and the commission of the agents is huge. I think we will try to do our best in the conditions that we are (in).

 

I am not happy. I am not happy with it but at the same time for me, it’s a challenge and I will try to do my best. If I decide to stay, it’s for the city, the fans, the stature of the club, to stay in England and in the Premier League. So I want to do my best but obviously every manager wants to improve. I’m happy with the players I have. The team spirit is quite good and hopefully we replicate that this season.

 

Rafa clarifies that qoute - and whether he’ll walk away:

 

“No, I decided to stay. When I decided to stay it’s because for me it’s a challenge. For me, I’m not totally happy with what we did but I will try to do my best, working very hard with people at the club to try and improve what we have at the moment.

 

“It’s very difficult (for me to walk away). My Chinese is not good enough.

 

“No I try to do my best now. It has to be something you cannot control. At the moment I am fully committed to do the best that I can do now.

 

Rafa on NUFC target for the season:

 

“The first thing is to try and be sure we don’t go back to the Championship - but with ambition.

 

“Ambition is every game for us will be a challenge for us to get three points and we’ll see how high we go in the table. But I can’t say ‘Oh, we’ll be in the top eight’. Fans will say ‘Fantastic, he is ambitious.’ But I’m very realistic. Let’s be sure we do very well every game and we’re out of the bottom three positions and then see where we go.”

 

Will Rafa get anyone in before Sunday?

 

With the transfer window open until the end of August, you can still bring players but before the game, you bring anyone in and they will be available for game.

 

“But they would need to know our tactics and I don’t think we would have time to do that. But if we bring someone in before the end (of the week), it will be a boost for everyone.

I think hanging on every word he says is unnecessary paranoia.

 

It is what it is. We need to enjoy it while he is here and do what he's pleading the fans to do every time he speaks in public; support the team, stick together.

 

It will actually increase the pull for him to stay if he sees a loyal connection between fans and team.

 

It's either this situation with Rafa or a yes-man who accepts low fee gambles from France and doesn't get any targets he personally wants?

 

Rafa's politics win hands down lets all be honest.

so basically he's confirming what we sort of knew; that there were some deals (abraham & caballero presumably) that could have been done quickly and reasonably but for whatever reason the club pissed about and since then prices have gone absolutely mental and he acknowledges that fully

Yep, also insinuating that he's been lied to as I remember him saying clearly that we needed to act quickly in the market (even before the window) opens to get some additions in as the longer you go on, the more desperate we look and teams will look to exploit. Fat Mike and his cronies obviously know better than a world-class football manager, though.

Not sure if this is a 2 day event but Rafa is coming on TalkSport shortly from the PL Launch and it sounds like the show is live. Wether you'll garner much new I'm not so sure but he's clearly already briefed them as the presenters made a point in saying in the introduction they'd spoke off air and he was frustrated how slow we were moving with transfers particularly at the start of the window.

He's in a win-win situation here like very few top class managers are in. He's on top money, he's loved, he's brilliant, if he does well then it further cements his status as a world class manager, if not, then it's because of the resources compared to other clubs. He'll be very aware of this too, he'd be mad to go.
