They've been pretty on the ball on since Rafa joined tbh, and I mean Ryder actually spoke to Rafa, and that's he's only reporting what he said. It's like the last 10 years never happened. 10 years of dicking around in the transfer market with no ambition other than to make a few quid and when we're seeing the same thing happening again, hearing the same rumours and reports and missing out on targets you can forgive people for getting a bit twitchy. Precisely. That said, if things were so bad Rafa wouldn't be here. It's not like he didn't get a glimpse into what they're like in January and this is all coming as some sort of surprise to him. He stayed on with assurances, unless/until he walks we can only assume things are still acceptable behind the scenes. We'll find out in the next couple of weeks I would think. Rafa's not going to walk while they are giving assurances, but at some point they will have to deliver. If they don't then we'll see what Rafa really thinks. That was underlined yesterday afternoon as Swansea City slapped a £50million price tag on Gylfi Sigurdsson while Bournemouth’s £20million purchase of Nathan Ake and Everton’s £30million deal for Michael Keane demonstrate the transfer market’s current extortionate climate. Benitez, speaking at United’s 1892 Foundation Cup event yesterday, said: “It’s not easy for a lot of teams because the market is a little bit crazy. We have to try to do our best. “The top sides have a lot of money. The other teams are spending too, but we will see what we can do.” Benitez was also asked if training the team during pre-season was preventing him getting deals done behind the scenes. When asked how much he was working the Toon boss pulled one mobile phone out of each pocket and said: “All the time. You have to be on the phone and you are training (at the same time). “I have very good staff and they can do the job. “I like to be there coaching and watching every movement in training too.” Even heavy rain showers could not wipe the smiles off faces of parents and youngsters attending this year’s Foundation Cup. Benitez said it was good to see the mood in the city upbeat after winning promotion. He said: “Everybody is happy when things are going well. “So yesterday was a good one to enjoy after a great season for Newcastle United. “This was more about the children and what they will get out of the tournament. “In England the rain is very common. In Spain we get the sun, but the rain can be good here. “If you are a player you prefer rain because you can run even faster as it is cooler. “Believe me in Spain playing 40 degrees you just can’t run. “The idea of all of this is not just playing in a tournament it is to have an engagement between the city and the club. “The Foundation has to be stronger in the future. “Yes, we seen some good players but that’s not the main aim.” However, Benitez was back to pre-season today and preparing the team for Friday’s friendly match with Hearts. He said: “When the holidays come the reality is you aren’t on holiday - you’re trying to do your best for the team. “As soon as you realise you’re coming back there’s soon another game.
