Newcastle United transfer rumours in the press

Completely against getting more players in if they are going to be like Hanley and Clark, either get proper quality players in or none.

Completely agree with this tbh sick of getting championship standard player's

Aye, because Premier League players are lining up to be our third/fourth choice centre back or our second/third choice striker. We're a Championship club at the moment. Come December when Mbemba's pulled his hamstring and Lascelles is suspended we'll be pretty thankful to be able to fall back on Hanley and Clark as our backup centre backs to be honest. I'm all for being ambitious but let's not get ridiculous.

The problem is that we should have spent the 10m we spent on Hanley and Clark on a first team centre back and made Lascellas third choice

We need more goals from midfield, last time we had Nolan, Guthrie, Raylor, Barton etc who could get the odd one. Richie's a great addition & Diame should add some. Hopefully aarons will step up, we're a bit stuck then though. De Jong perhaps, another would help.

Id be suprised if we went for another striker

Lascelles was superb end of last season enough to become captain which near everyone agreed with, this hindsight fickle switching of ideas is silly man. Have belief in players, he was a cut above at prem level for a period under rafa.

So in the above scenario I outlined (two of our centre backs being out at some point in the season - not an entirely unlikely prospect) who is playing alongside our other remaining fit centre back? And how many centre backs worth £10m are sitting around this summer waiting for an offer from us? We love the club so it sometimes blinds us but I doubt there are many first class centre backs who want to drop down a division.

we had nolan, the end.

pretty sure barton only got 1 that season (free kick i think?) and i'd back diame to outscore both guthrie and raylor, and ritchie to outscore them all.

lets not pretend we had plenty of goals from midfield last time, nolan aside, we really didn't.

We need to create chances for that to happen tbh.

We need players who can string a few passes together from defence through midfield for that to happen.

35 goals from midfield is quite a lot like, Nolan got just under half of those.

Barton was out injured for most of our promotion season but popped up again towards the end to revel in glory he had little to do with.  Wiki says he made 15 appearances but to be honest I'm surprised it was that high.  Midfield was generally Guthrie-Nolan-Smith-Jonas before January transfer window and Routledge-Nolan-Guthrie-Jonas once we'd signed Routledge.

An interview with him on 19/03/10 when he'd been out injured for six months and was just about getting fit.

Really annoys me when people (him included) go on like he was integral to our promotion, after a while it becomes accepted fact even though it's bollocks.  He was good for us until Christmas the following season and that's about it.

Swap Barton for Jonas. Either way, we did have scoring mids, the guys who got the assists were Guthrie, Jonas & Raylor etc Shelvey & Richie should be competing with them. Richie got nearly the same as our top two assisters put together that season on his own at this level two seasons ago. We could probably do with another attacking/creative midfielder, beyond that we should already have the players at this level.

A couple of our players in midfield (Richie and Diame) are better than every midfielder we had last time so with another addition or two I think we'll be fine there. There's a better overall standard in the league now though.

Maybe better, but not as important as Nolan in terms of his goals and character within the team.

Still think we are sorely missing leaders and characters in the squad, in fact I don't think we have any.

Lascelles?

Still too early to say I think. Obviously he was vocal towards the end of last season, but in a way the situation made it easier for him to speak up. Having watched him as captain, he doesn't exactly inspire massive confidence that he is the right man for he job, obviously two games is too early to judge but that's my immediate impression.

totally agree on nolan, but ritchie could quite feesibly hit/surpass his figures.

the others mentioned, guthrie got 4, barton got 1, raylor got 4. Diame did that on his own for hull last season.

they were hardly prolific.

For me there's a big difference between vocal and being listened to and respected too but you would hope Rafa has enough of that to get us by.

Agreed, however there are times throughout difficult moments in our matches, where we lack the personality of players to get hold of the ball and be brave enough with it. That could be down to lack of quality more than leadership/character though.

On one hand you're saying they weren't prolific, then saying we should ignore the one who was. As a unit they were, it doesn't matter so much where they come from individually, in fact it's better if they all get a few as it means we don't lose out so much when injuries hit.

Put it this way, I'll be absolutely fucking astonished if we score 35 goals from midfield this season.
