Dunno how many others are like me, but I don't sing the national anthem anyway. It's not particularly the monarchist aspect but the religious element. It's a glorified hymn and I'm not a Christian.

I agree with that somewhat, I don't say the lords prayer for that reason. I prefer Jerusalem but again that has religious connotations. I take the hymns to being more linked to England though and so I love the anthem and Jerusalem because I take pride in being a Geordie, British and English.

With things like this all I will say is once you’ve done it once then it will be demanded for others further down the line. If pleasing people on this occasion is proving to be tricky then that’s usually a sign to say keep well clear 😬 

 

Anti-monarchy as I am that image of her handing over the cup is probably as far as I’d go if the decision is to do something for her. Just to muddy the waters further 🙂

 

Personally I’d have a giant flag of EH saying “Our King” or “King Of Newcastle” 🙂

The beauty of Wor Flags is the dedication of the people giving their time and skills for the collective benefit of our club. This makes me think whatever they want to do, within reason, I’d be supportive of. However, it risks divisiveness if drifting into any shows of support which aren’t purely NUFC related. Such cracks can be difficult to mend. 
 

Apparently only a third of young people are pro-Royal/think the Royal family should continue (link below). The proportion growing to three quarters of over 65s. I’m guessing even with the mood music ‘the establishment’ (sorry if this sounds paranoid) is playing, trying to whip-up common human decency and respect for life and loss,  into a national mass grieving, there’s probably an even split across all age groups with a third caring, a third ambivalent and a third totally unaffected by the death of Elizabeth. Probably best to steer clear, adopt a neutral position and simply keep aligned with what the group is there to do/all fully committed to.

Even as an ardent Republican (UK) I can understand why. If you have tributes for fans, players etc then the nations head of state would be a given and this is where it gets difficult for how each individual does it. I'd respect the tribute for the Queen but giggled all the way through her sisters.

Fans and players have a connection to NUFC, the thing that unites every person in the stadium. A monarch head of state is a totally different matter in this day and age. I touched on it in another thread, but it would be accepted as a given that a tribute to the Tories would a no-go political divider, this is the same principle.
