Mikel Merino (now playing for Arsenal)

I can't say it sits overly right that he's gone running the moment he's required to work for a place in the team. I liked him as a player but that's not really the attitude you want in your squad.

Something has stunk for a while with Merino. Hugely disappointed in him for doing this. What, he had no confidence in his ability to usurp Mo Diame? It's not like he's joining a bigger club for bigger money.

Good riddance, unfortunately.

Probably just a lot more tempting to fight at home in Spain than in Newcastle tbh. Can't blame him for preferring to go home, it's not like we're a very sexy project to be involved with. Rafa is the only saving grace and god knows how long he'll be around.

At worst NUFC must break even on this deal (taking into account transfer fee, signing fee and agent fee) otherwise there will have been no point signing him. NUFC knew about the release clause so they'll have known the figures involved to make a profit/break even before he even joined.

Maybe he just jumped at the chance to join us so he could escape Dortmund, while at us he has had his agent doing the rounds to help him get back to Spain???

Pretty much the same Spanish teams were in for him when he was leaving Dortmund. NUFC 'won' the transfer battle for his signature.

Ahh fair enough then.

Rafa probably signed him in the hope that he can convince Merino that his long-term future lies with NUFC, to get a new contract sans clause signed (ball in our court instead of Dortmund's). Player decides otherwise. Pretty much nothing more we can do.
