Rafa Benítez (now unemployed)

Recommended Posts

Was all going well on the 5-Live interview...then they started comparing him to Allardyce & Pulis with his style of play and coaching.

f*** sake  doesn't surprise me though, most football media is so black and white. You are either the dominating possession guy or really negative and direct.

The idea of any in between is completely beyond anyones comprehension.

Aye. Everything is a tired cliche.

Rafa signing a new contract would be the best news ever like.

I'd be surprised if he does though, he will want to see them sweat first and see if they back him in January.

Aye that's how i see it. Why would he at this point?

This 5.5 million buy out clause worries the hell out of me.

Why wouldn't he sign it? If he's on a longer contract he's less likely to be messed about. Especially on his wages.

The only way he'll leave this club is if a bigger team comes in and pays off his contract.. or.. constructive dismissal.

I think you've got your logic backwards.

From the chronicle

"A report in the Times today suggests that Ashley is pleased with United’s opening few games but with United still effectively up for sale, the owner wants to make sure that the club’s biggest asset - in Benitez - remains on board to ensure Newcastle are an attractive proposition to potential buyers."

Here is the Times article. Would've fully believed it if it was Caulkin, but he's currently on holiday:

Newcastle want new deal for Rafa Benítez

exclusive

Matt Hughes, Deputy Football Correspondent

Newcastle United are preparing to open talks with Rafa Benítez about a new contract in the hope of improving the manager’s relationship with owner Mike Ashley.

The Spaniard’s contract expires at the end of next season, but after a good start under Benítez on Newcastle’s return to the Premier League this season, the club are planning to initiate negotiations over a longer-term deal.

Ashley has also made several overtures to Benítez in the past few weeks

Benítez’s response will be governed by what he hears from Ashley regarding his vision for the club during the negotiations, after what proved a difficult summer transfer window, in which the manager was frustrated by a lack of signings and the collapse of several proposed deals.

The 57-year-old even considered resigning at various points because of a lack of backing in the transfer market, although a decent start to the campaign — in which Newcastle have taken nine points from their first six matches — has eased tensions.

Ashley has also made several overtures to Benítez in the past few weeks and is believed to have invited him to dinner recently, which is seen as a precursor to contract talks.

The Sports Direct owner’s right-hand man, Justin Barnes, met Benítez before Newcastle’s Premier League victory over Stoke City ten days ago and is understood to have passed on Ashley’s best wishes. Barnes, a lawyer at Sports Direct, has become increasingly influential at St James’ Park of late, but is not a club employee.

Benítez’s contract contains a £5.5 million release clause, which is likely to prove a central part of the discussions. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager has attracted strong interest from West Ham United after their poor start to the season under Slaven Bilic, and he would not want to price himself out of a future move by signing a long contract with a high exit clause.

Newcastle’s desire to tie down Benítez is partly due to Ashley’s attempts to sell the club, with The Times reporting last weekend that he has lowered his asking price to £380 million, as the manager is viewed as one of their biggest assets.

Tomer Hemed, the Brighton & Hove Albion forward, has been charged by the FA with violent conduct for his alleged stamp on DeAndre Yedlin, the Newcastle United defender, during his side’s 1-0 win on Sunday. Hemed, who scored the winner, denied that the act had been deliberate. He has until 6pm today to respond to the charge.

 Honestly, man.  Some people spend so much time trying to read between the lines they end up cross-eyed.

Why doesn't Ashley pick up the phone and say "rafa, we need you, would you sign a contract for this amount xxxx and ill give you this amount xxxx to sign players?"

Instead of pushing stuff out in the media....oh wait a minute I see what he is doing, he is laying the ground work of "we tried" when Rafa finally gets sick and walks.

Or maybe the potential new owners want him tied down.
