House of Fraser attacks 'greedy' landlords

House of Fraser has criticised "greedy landlords" that are resisting new owner Mike Ashley's attempts to cut rents on the store chain's 59 outlets.

Earlier this month the Sports Direct owner bought the retailer for £90m after it collapsed into administration.

It has been seeking to cut rents in an attempt to prevent stores from closing.

About seven stores have been saved so far including Plymouth, Darlington and Middlesbrough, as well as its flagship store on London's Oxford Street.

Mr Ashley's firm warned landlords that "time is running out" to keep stores open.

Ashley vows to keep stores open

"Some landlords are being very collaborative in order to give us a chance at turning the business around, giving House of Fraser a lifeline and saving hundreds of jobs," a spokesman said.

"However, some greedy landlords would rather see the stores close than help save the jobs of hundreds of people.

"We will continue to try and convince these landlords but ultimately time is running out. Some closures will be announced."

Mike Ashley bought House of Fraser for £90m

Mr Ashley vowed to save about 47 House of Fraser stores after buying the chain, which he aims to make "the Harrods of the high street".

"We will do our best to keep as many stores open as possible," he said.

Other House of Fraser stores the new owner says will remain open are Telford, Aylesbury and Carlisle.

Rates-only deals

Sports Direct needs to cut costs if the loss-making department store chain is to remain viable and continue trading, but some landlords are opposing rent reductions of the scale it is demanding.

BBC News understands some have been asked to sign deals for rent equivalent to 5% of a store's turnover, while about 28 stores would not get any rent at all but have their business rates paid for.

Most landlords will end up taking a financial hit, but some think Sports Direct's proposals will be a better than an earlier restructuring deal that would have resulted in 31 stores closing.

Offering rates-only deals, or "meanwhile leases", to landlords is an unprecedented move for such a big, established retailer.

One retail property expert told the BBC that such an offer would be quite attractive for some landlords: "They continue to trade, without the burden of business rates which gives them at least a year to come up with a plan.

"If the stores trade successfully, then there's always the possibility of a better deal with Ashley down the road."

Rafa will get every penny the club generates

Allardyce makes perfect sense to Ashley now. Won’t get relegated, won’t ask for more. Won’t raise hope. Perfect.

The writing was on the wall as soon as he publicly apologised to him in that Sky Sports interview.

If the players are in on this (as has been rumoured) then they’re a bunch of shite hawks and I’m not sure I could bring myself to support them.

If this worst case scenario comes to pass, there will never be an easier time to cast this club aside and get on with life.

Added benefit of the fans hating him too, which Ashley will love. 'Pwopa wind those jawdee cant's up, eh Keef'?

Same with Pardew who is worryingly available.

If there is any shred of truth in the players going behind Rafa's back, they should all be booed to fuck every time they pull on our shirts. Fucking ungrateful set of cunts.

I wish I could believe that but I really don't. I reckon there would be a significant percentage of our support who would rate Fat Sam and agree with his prehistoric ideas. If they could make excuses for Pardew then Allardyce would be like footballing royalty in comparison.

This alleged business of the players going behind Rafa's back, sounds like a plan from Fat Cunt and Bishop to divide and conquer to me, be it to divide Rafa from the players or the fans from the team.

Said it early on that he’ll close stores with those being located in Intu centre’s being the first to be cut since he fell out with them over his Sports Direct and USC stores. Sports Direct are not short of money for rent, to put things into perspective he has just bought a building on Northumberland Street for over £30m so he can house all his brands in one location without having to pay rent and without having to be in Eldon Square (partially owned by Intu).

If these landlords agree to mega cheap deals (in some cases no rent) for better deals down the line, then they’ll soon find out that better deals down the line won’t exist. Ashley would rather buy the building across the road then give the landlords money in future. The thing is though some landlords need a big anchor store like HOF and losing HOF means they are left with porobsbly their largest unit being vacant with no one else really in line to take it’s place, ultimately resulting in the unit having to be broken up into smaller units.

Fortunately Intu (the largest shopping mall owner in the U.K.) don’t need HOF. Shopping centre’s like the Metrocentre will do just fine without HOF.

Sounds like shit. Charnley was one of the ones refusing to give the players a bonus and has done before, he’s also likely being a dick over any potential contract renewals. Rafa on the other hand is the guy most of them credit to making them better players. I can’t see any reason why the players would suddenly be crawling to Charnley because they disagreed with the tactics of 1 game with Rafa.

To be fair, the rent and rates in places like the Metro Centre and Eldon Square are ridiculous and one of the reasons why so many smaller independent shops or stores are disppapearing. I can see such places in the near future being more and more dominated by restaurants or sales points for cars and other big ticket things as more and more people use the web to buy clothes etc.

Where SD has done well is that their customer base is predominantly made up of students, chavs, the unemployed, and house wives who have the time to pop into the town for example to buy a few things from SD. That and a limited budget to spend on shit. Even then though, it’s facig tough times ahead as most high street retailers are. Hopefully one day the Town will be mostly a place to visit to relax with more open spaces or populated with things to visit that doesn’t require everyone to spend spend spend consuming shit. Not more pop up food places though or market stalls...

The more savvy and those whose time is otherwise occupied during the day tend to use the internet more to buy stuff so that's having an effect on the high street as well. Mind a lot of consumers in certain demographs view a trip to the Toon or the metty as some kind of social ellement to their lives and shopping is still a huge sub culture in England so it’s not going to just die.

Me, I couldn’t think nowt worse than popping into the Town or the Metro Centre to spend a day unless I absolutely had to, vile places full of vile people in the main.

Just ordinary folk going about their day to day business in the main. As they are two of the most populated places you may get a few more but that's just down to the law of averages.
