I’m wondering if he’s been promised a move and for whatever reason it didn’t happen in the summer. Always seemed a bit strange bringing in the Greek fella and Ruddy with Gillespie still there

I'm suspicious that this talk of keeping him due to his form is to try and get a fee of note for him.

Yep, concur with above comments. Thought the reason we were letting him go this window was that we were getting a fee for him.

If its for nothing, we may as well keep him till the summer, when he can go for free anyway.

We got absolutely shafted by not having a real keeper in the last cup final. There is zero incentive to let him go now, let him walk in the summer.

Yep when there was a decent fee rumoured then despite leaving us in a tight spot it made sense to go with Pope, Vlac and potentially Trafford.

 

With no fee it makes it a tougher call as Dubravka will want to leave and secure his future and that prevent us from securing a new GK this window.

 

Wonder if such a positive first leg result has swayed the clubs thinking. Remember the second leg is outside the window. Also you can’t blame EH for having PTSD after the events leading up to the last Cup Final so if we were to secure our spot…

 

Can’t see us holding him against his will but I would imagine we’d have to guarantee any potential Cup Final place.

So pay his wages until the summer, he carries on being a capable backup for Pope (based on these last 7-8 games) and everyone is a bit less paranoid about another injury to our number 1.  Then he goes for free when his contract runs out.  Or we let him leave for free now?  

 

Why the fuck would we just let him leave for free this month if there is no PSR benefit?  That makes no sense.

I was always under the impression that any fee was negligible.

 

I can see both sides to this one. I can see why Dubravka will want the security of the Saudi money and I can see why Newcastle might want to keep him around because we may have a cup final on the horizon.

 

Fair play to Dubravka for playing so well that he's causing this headache.

Psychologically going out there without peak season Pope is hard to quantify but we needed as many experienced heads as possible to handle that atmosphere. I don’t want to be going into a final with a third choice keeper again.

I don't think it's Dubravka that is the concern. It's the lack of a goalkeeper.

 

I don't think Eddie wants to give him a 10 year contract but I think he will be deeply annoyed if we go into a cup final with a Greek Salad in goal.

It unsettled our back four and structure as at that time we were used to Pope sweeping quite high which even he doesn’t really do much now. 
 

As for just the goals specifically I would agree that the first one probably still beats Pope despite his bigger reach due to the pace off the cross but sadly I still think he saves the second.

 

The point I think we are making wasn’t meant as a dig a Karius. He made a great second half save I recall. The point is we went from Pope to having a Cup Tied Dubravka and rely on our third choice GK for his one and only game for the club in a Cup Final!
