Fabian Schär

He's a warrior, silk and steel, one minute tangling with centre forwards and the next pinging 60 yard passes and stepping into midfield with the ball or getting in shooting positions. Wish he was 10 years younger, he's almost unique.

I don’t even think I’m going too far when I say he is one of the best CB’s we’ve ever had.. (especially in my lifetime). More so in his Howe years obviously, but he’s been top drawer. Some beautiful goals too.

It’s probably been overlooked but he’s a beautiful hunk of a man too!

The debate since last year has been if he IS the best CB we've ever had or not.

Copied my post from the Barnes thread.

Without Schar, we lose that game and not just cause he scored. On a few occasions, he would just ping it cross field to Barnes and we would be on the front foot.

His defending is decent, but having him at the back bringing the ball out and finding those passes makes all the difference to our football.

He played a 60 yard diagonal in for Gordon first half that was absolutely inch perfect. Gordon failed to control it and went down but he was in if he took it down.

The best passer in our side easily.

This. Even taking his goal out of his performance. Just having him back in for his passing is huge. Just switches play easily and makes those diagonals look effortless.

Really important player for us. Especially with no Trippier or Botman in the back 4 with their passing.

Signing a new long term replacement of Fab doesn't sit well with me because I can't fathom an NUFC team without him.

The future is blue and wears a fluffy cardigan 🤷‍♂️ can’t fathom it either.

He can play in CM instead, next to Bruno and Tonali, it's all good.

I don’t think anyone wants to replace Schär. He’s just getting older and his main back ups are Krafth and injured Lascelles.

Missing out on Guehi might be a blessing if we instead go for someone with a lesser profile and cheaper price to maximise the last years of Schär. He better stay fit though.

Exactly. This isn't even fan driven, it's something the club have openly been looking for for 12 months now. Ideally an understudy for Schar, don't think we really expected a Guehi type of signing at this stage of our development, but the club chose to pursue it.

I think one reason for Guehi was that both him and Fab can play on the left too so he wouldn't be just a clear replacement for Schär. Our CB's would have been pretty versatile in case Botman isn't ready for a while and we would've finally had two good RCB's. Schär's fitness record has been huge for us in the past two seasons, knocks on wood.

If we want to challenge top four we absolutely should have at least 3 cbs who would be fine first choices. With two of the top quality you are always going to be playing a significant amount of the season with an arm tied around your back.

should sort itself out when Botman is back - think Kelly has the makings to be very class for us under Howe’s coaching.

Was mint under Rafa aswell. Probably our best player back then alongside Federico Fernandez and Leujene. Bruce might have saved us from having to sell him to a top club. Bruce took over a very solid defence and turned it into a horror show..
