We'll obviously miss an excellent defender and ball player when the moment comes that he's pensioned off, but I think we will miss his goals nearly as much. Class act.

I don't think there's another CB like him in world football. He'll be such a big miss when he finally retires.

Genuinely one of my favourite Toon players of all time.

I think he is over the hill.

Yes, some older players fade very quickly, some gradually. Fab is in the former unfortunately. Obvious now why we wanted a new right CB last summer.

Think he'll be benched once Sven is back. Even if it means plating two left CBs.

Age catching up to him? Too many games? No one for competition? Still to agree his future? All of it?

I want a fair few players out of the side to try and freshen up and give them a kick in the arse they need but don't see anyone taking his place off him without a signing.

If there is any budget at all is it an attacker or a defender both departments trying their best to make a case for new signings.

Seems like we maybe should have rotated more if anything. 2 games in a week at his age will make mistakes more likely. Brilliant on Wednesday, shocking today, likewise (albeit to a lesser extent) Joelinton.

Rotate him with who though? Kelly? We literally have no other choice until we sign someone better or Lascelles and Botman get back fit and healthy.

We went into a premier league season with only 3 fit senior CBs, 2 over 33 and another on a free who is a LB/CB hybrid and so far has looked poor.

I bet if we went through every other squad, especially the teams we're meant to be competing with for europe, I bet they have far more depth at CB than we do. Villa, Spurs, Chelsea, Man U, Brighton, West Ham, all have atleast 4 senior CBs off the top of my head.

Offensively he's still one of the best around for a CB.

Legs have definitely gone from a defensive point of view. Pretty much every game now he's sliding in for stuff and not getting there anymore. It's the classic thing of he body not performing as your head thinks it still can.

If we leave him and Burn exposed with careless passing like Osula tonight and Barnes did in that Brentford away game then it's going to be a goal near enough everytime unfortunately.

However I feel sorry for both Burn and Schar in that the club have unfortunately left Eddie short of options and the old boys need to play every min of every game and generally have played well when not exposed.

But we do need to give them protection because pace is a real issue for us if not.

Fair but it's not the club. It's PSR/FFP and the PL.

I know 100%, but from the perspective tha the rules were set in place. It's not too unkind to suggest our recruitment for building the squad has left us short in some areas.

We knew Botman and Lascelles were long term injuries way in advance of the summer window. Granted we tried to get that Tosin guy who went to Chelsea and then picked up Kelly before throwing all our eggs in the Guehi basket. So I guess they tried, but it doesn't excuse the fact they failed.

Perhaps they expected Kelly to be better than he has shown. None the less even then, just having 3 fit senior CBs in the squad when two of them are around 32+ I think was too risky. We're already a little screwed by the fact Schar is now out of the 1st leg of the cup and I believe is 1 booking away from a league suspension also.

Botman might be back soon and whilst it's naive I think we can survive.

I think when you read opinions across the board in here it's generally RW and CF that folk thought we needed to bolster. We simply couldn't afford 2 upgrades to our first 11 let alone 3. Granted we got 0.

Us signing Guehi and getting a fine tune out of him would have set out back four up for a decade imo. But we base our football on attacking it would seem. The main thing stopping us above all else is our incapbility to spend what we have not our transfer policy imo. All of the signings made have been good and sensible and Howe has proven it.

We've been hamstrung by corrupt governing bodies and their minions.
