it was a great day. Lovely weather. Said during the game, love an evening kickoff in early spring or late summer with the sun shining on the East stand. Pitch was lush and the atmosphere was positive throughout. That bit at the end with Rafa and the players was heart-warming, fist-bumping Dubravka. Playing La Bamba at full time was fitting.

Got talking to a half pissed Southampton fan in the Beehive on Saturday. After singing 'Oh when the saints' under his breath he was saying people think they're not as passionate down south but they always sell out away, clearly overlooking the fact they only took half the away section that day. Also said he loves clubs with big followings like NUFC and wanted Leeds to come up for that reason. Went on to call the likes of Fulham and Brighton tinpot. This was from a Southampton fan!

Nice Jenas pulling up Shearer for being too kind to the ref

Can't believe Al there like, if that isn't a goalscoring opportunity nothing is.

He was saying due to the distance from goal by the letter of the law it’s not a red - what’s wrong with that?

Cos it's still a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Shearer himself wasn't the quickest, maybe that's why he couldn't get his head round it being a goal scoring opportunity.

Wat

One of the best strikers of all time.... doesn't know how to sniff out a goal scoring opportunity, basically.

I was that was 100% penalty at the time as you know the speed they’re breaking no one catches them.  But what’s the ref meant to do if that was Joselu breaking?  Or if he knows the defender is the quickest in the country.  Half a pitch is a big distance that could allow a goal scoring chance not to happen.

Having said that I think it’s always wrong if a foul is the preferred option for the defender.  Top teams have been doing this for years (especially arsenal).  Press high then foul if break on.  Something should be done just don’t know what.  If they give the ref the ability to judge it big teams will win again as refs will believe they would have got back.

Josh (?) Sims was tracking back, not that far away from where Almiron played the ball past JWP, and is quick enough to overtake everyone on our team bar Almiron in that situation so wasn't that fussed about the decision as much as I was cursing at JWP.

That foul looks worse each time I see it. No attempt whatsoever to move back towards the ball, his only intention is to take Almiron out. If not a goalscoring opportunity, which it clearly was, it's serious foul play anyway.

Just the latest in a long list of curious decisions against Newcastle.

Great win. The bloke sat next to me walked in as the teams were coming out - he took one look at the rainbow flag, described it as sad and then  made a derogatory comment (which he then repeated twice during the game). Feels a bit sad I've got his seat number and am going to report it. No one likes a tell tale but equally I feel that if I just let it go then people will just continue to get away with it.

Get it done

I did end up reporting this but am a little disappointed with the club's response. The chap has denied using the words I reported, so I understand that it is a difficult one. At the same time he apologised (although I am not sure what for) and maintains that the rainbow flags have no place in football. The club have told me they can't start a 'covert operation' because there is only one game left. They also say that they don't want to beat someone with a stick and have responded proportionately by writing to him and sending him the united as one leaflet.

I am not sure what i expected, but I think given he was maintaining his view I wanted more. I just feel the club has been a little weak, particularly as it happened on the day that they launched an inclusivity initiative. They are encouraging people to report incidents yet there doesn't seem to be a deterrent - he will be sat in his seat tomorrow, so there is no real consequence to his actions. Either they are committed to making SJP an inclusive, safe and welcoming space for all or they aren't. To me it seems they aren't.

As I said I do appreciate it is a difficult situation, and am trying to decide whether to express my disappointment to them or just move on. Perhaps time to let this one go?

It is 100% lip service from the club. They have no real interest in equality or mental health.

That's not really fair. And it's actually a stupid attitude, as what you are saying is, their is no point complaining because the club will do nowt. You can't blame the club for this. As far as we are aware the club have received ONE complaint, which has been denied. Nowt the club can do if nobody corroborates the claim.

Durham did right to complain, but the names of a few willing witnesses would have helped his, and the club's cause.

Agree, if he denies it then it is a case of one person's word against another so the club can't really do anything. However, given that he has continued to maintain his view that the rainbow flags (and therefore in my view is saying that LGBQT) has no place at SJP, the fact that he has been sent a leaflet doesn't feel good enough. If he were, for example, banned from the Liverpool game, that would have had a greater impact in my view.

Well, having an opinion on where the rainbow flag has a place, or doesn't, isn't a crime. I get where you're coming from and support your endeavours, but as you have conceded yourself, at this point there is little the club can do.

Yeah, I don’t agree with his view over the rainbow flag, and possibly his overall view on the LBGT community, but having those views isn’t illegal.

Did he say what you alleged? Most probably, however it’s a tricky thing for the club to enforce when it is virtually one persons word for another. If the club banned him and there was no evidence aside for your word, then he could easily challenge it in the courts and all of a sudden there would be compo claims, etc for the club to endure.

Your best bet is to just ask people around you to help keep an eye on him, because sooner or later he’ll abuse someone else.

If people can’t express their identity to link with football (provided it harms noone) you might as well do away with union jacks, st George crosses and county flags as they have almost fuck all in relation to what’s on the pitch.

They can. And his opinion isn't preventing anybody from doing that. I think we can all agree he's a bit of a cunt (if not total), and will hopefully reap the harvest of what he sows. People need to keep complaining, that is how process works. Giving up, because the club haven't leap-frogged the legal system in the way we all wish they could, is not the answer.

I appreciate it's easy for me to say this as I'm not in the position to do anything, and if I was I wouldn't thank anybody for it. As Stifler says, talk to others in your area, and without forming a lynch mob, get the cunt thrown out in a way that he has no comeback.

Exactly, unfortunately what he has apologised for is not a criminal offence. The others in the area are friends of his so would presumably not corroborate my version of events.

He has denied using the homophobic language - he said "fucking puffs" at least three times throughout the game - and as others have said on that point it is one persons word against another. As the club have pointed out, I could report that as a criminal offence.
