No criticism at all of Gordon, but there's a real chance the sum of two Joes is more effective than Gordon plus either one of them.

File this in the nice problems category. Irritating things are a lot easier to deal with if you're part of a winning team.

Would start him back wide left against Ben Shite with Gordy on the right for sure.

Wont White be in the middle if one of their main CBs is out?

Possibly. Either way I’d have him out there. Gordon was decent on the right today as well.

White, if he’s playing, gets forward quite well so would help shut that down too as well as being extra cover against Saka.

Howe singled him out after Chelsea job - nothing most of us don't already know but nice to hear it from the manager:

"I have to say a special well done to Joelinton today. His versatility is just incredible, he’s such a bonus for us to be able to play him wide left, wide right, wingback, brilliant performance.

"It’s a difficult position for me to pick (left wing) because we have an array of riches on that side with Anthony (Gordon), Harvey (Barnes), Joe (Willock) and Joelinton.

"When Joelinton and Joe Willock play together, they dovetail in that position really well. I’m not sure what the final solution to that is, other than that we have very good players competing for places, which is what we need in all areas of the pitch.

“Today, we utilised Anthony on the right of the pitch, and I thought he did fine. I thought Joelinton and Joe Willock did really well down the left, and I was delighted with the solidity they both gave us.

"He’s not your conventional winger - he’s a hybrid of different qualities, but plays the position brilliantly for me. He always has done. If someone said to me, ‘What’s Joelinton’s best position’, I’d struggle to give you one answer.

"That’s a brilliant thing for me to have within the squad, but sometimes when you pick a team, it’s not just about having a player in a certain position, it’s about the relationships that they form around them.

"It’s the understanding, and bringing the best out of other players. I thought Joelinton and Joe Willock did that together.”

Him and Willock just get best out of each other on that LW, because of their ability to interchange.

Once again both superb in those roles, gives us great balance and importantly helps us be more solid.

Think it’s now Barnes/Gordon mostly for RW with Joe/Willock 1st choice for games on left, as it’s back to 21-22 stuff with them.

When he plays on the left, he's like having an extra CM and a winger at the same time, and he guarantees that his left back gets adequate cover.

I think his days of CM are numbered, other than the odd game.

Still astonishing me what a transformation it is since his Bruce days.

Yeah, having him at LW solves all kinds of issues with the first 11, providing Gordon is happy to go at RW at least until we can address the position issue in a future window.

Barnes doesn't seem to have enough in his game to be a starter at the moment.

Glad Eddie has come to a solution.

That’s the beauty of the Big Joe/Little Joe left side combo meal. Joelinton does often tuck in and appear in central

areas even when he’s not playing CM. He covers 2 positions and also pops up as an auxiliary fullback at times.

He didn’t do it as much today. He stayed pretty wide, with Willock getting more of a free role and taking up the central areas. But they compliment each other so well with the positions they take up.

Worked like a charm.

My main issue with Joelinton is his lack of ability (at times) on the ball in the centre of midfield so the LW/occasional CM/ocassional LWB role suits him so much. Means we get all the qualities of Joelinton without that nervousness of him being a little careless on the ball in dangerous places. Thought he was fantastic today and it was great to see a return to what we did so well two seasons ago!

With the way Joelinton plays that wide position, with him tucking in and combining well with others, I'm surprised we never explored him doing similar on the right when we were struggling for quality in that area.

Will be interesting to see if that ever happens in future if we feel that Gordon needs to be back out left.

He’s just a big massive loveable problem solver.

He will sit on and box out a teams creative player, he will help in the press, he will sit next to a team mate in trouble and solve that

The sort of “left” thing he does as it isn’t “wing” work is where he excels, going and fixing things.

I’d rather he wasn’t the first body in the minefield of relying on your touch and pass in midfield ala Bruno,  but when he’s second man in picking up on the scraps of that, that’s fine

That big doing a shift on the left thing though, that’s his place, that’s where he excels
