Shirley I can't be the only person who's worried that something else is going on here.

Why is he in Monaco? Howe strikes me as very keen on a spirit of togetherness. Is there some kind of specialised medical unit next to the casino?

Last week he was in training, but wasn't even on the bench at West Ham. There's not much clarity about how severe this injury actually is.

He plays very much as an individual, and we've tended to treat him as our saviour. I think Bruce indulged him a bit. Howe's mentality seems to be that it's just as important to get that bit extra out of the weaker members of the squad, so maybe ASM isn't getting the attention he thinks he deserves?

This isn't the first time ASM has gone back to France for treatment. I'm sure if you scroll back in this thread you'll find similar quotes to your own from people speculating about falling outs with Bruce. I think ASM just likes to get home from time to time, and is killing two birds with one stone by getting quality treatment at the same time.

I feel a bit conspiracyish about it too tbh. Not so much that he just wants to go home but more that his fitness is so fragile that he requires careful management. He still plays like his hamstrings are about to burst. Mind, we literally signed an amateur who was his friend just to keep him happy so maybe it's the homesick thing too.

My hunch is that the calf thing is a cover and, rather, he's been close to burn-out and so he's been sent to France during these two away days to rest/recharge/get treatment so that he's ready for the run-in. Rather than receiving treatment for a specific match-sustained issue.

He has such immense talent that you have to wonder why he's only played for Nice and Newcastle (saw that he was at Monaco but they didn't keep him). I'm convinced he's got some fundamental fitness limitations.

Looking forward to seeing him back regardless because he's absolutely class when he's on the pitch.

His interviews always seem genuine and everything about them indicate that he’s happy to be here and wants the team to get better.

He’s injured, there’s no conspiracy. Bloody Luke Edwards knew about it straight after the Villa game.

Seeing he's been allowed to do this before, it would make it more difficult for Howe to refuse. But that doesn't make the situation a satisfactory one.

It's hard to believe that the fact that this so-called 'specialised treatment' happens to be in one of his old stamping grounds is just a coincidence. It looks like he'd simply prefer to have his treatment there for personal reasons.

I'm assuming that he hasn't been flying back to Newcastle for his fitness tests, and then returning to Monaco. In which case, the decision about his fitness doesn't really rest in the club's hands.

Don't see the problem. ASM has been absolutely crocked for months. Gets to 60 minutes and he's standing around hand on hips, taking ages to get back up after getting the ball taken off him.

That's not a criticism of him, the club have needed to take care of him for ages and due to our predicament, we haven't been able to do that.

His fitness levels have improved recently but 100% believe his legs are probably covered in bruises from being hacked down. He also had a bad dose of Covid the previous year. Any lung damage will put limitations on the oxygen his body can absorb which would easily explain how he hits walls in games roughly around the same point.

The other thing to note, he's not built like the average footballer, he's an absolute supercar if can use than analogy. You don't bring a Bugatti to a budget price mechanic if it needs a service.

Completely agree, it's not a bad idea to rest him a bit before the final run-in considering all of the above points, regardless of whether he has an "injury" I'm sure he's knackered from carrying the team for the last two years.

The nice part is Eddie's getting us results without him, so the pressure is off a bit as well.

I also think, and this will be true of almost every player on our books, let's give them a preseason under Eddie Howe before we judge their physical quality.

The Bruce injury crisis is well established at his previous clubs, and his coaching staff were quick to throw the medical team under the bus after they were sacked. I think Ryan Fraser is a good example of someone that clearly looks fitter and sharper under Howe, but has also picked up several minor complaints because he doesn't have that bank of fitness from preseason.

The same could be true of Saint-Maximin, and then you throw in COVID and the fact he does get a good kicking most games, I'd much prefer we gave him time.

Play him on the right pls. :shifty:

It might actually see him register more assists. It was Burnley at home where he basically left their lad for dead and squared it for Wilson to tap home.

Wasn't in the training photos released on the official site yesterday. Hope he's at least back on the bench come Saturday.

Neither was Trippier in the build up to the Villa game. I'd be surprised if he missed out vs. Brentford on a late call but isn't fit enough for the bench on Saturday.
