Sandrotastico
Needs some pace up front alongside him. But also needs to pull his head out his arse. Embrace a little of the Bruno energy to play in front of a packed St James.
Holloway
he gestured mid run at the lack of support around him, i`d reserve judgement on him until there is an upgrade of quality around him
Shak
It's very encouraging that he's clearly trying to change the way he plays, you can see that he's been asked to release the ball more and is trying to do it. Bodes well for the long term prospects of him being part of the team. Thought it was actually to his detriment on the great run where he beat three players, tried to play it to Almiron when the pass just wasn't on. Really wanted him to just go at the last defenders there. It's definitely frustrating watching him at the moment. It definitely doesn't help that the other players in the front three are basically useless, you'd hope with better players around him things will go better. I hope we get to see it next year, I'm not convinced by any means he'll be able to play as part of a cohesive team rather than as a wildcard individual but I'd certainly like to give it a full season under Howe to find out. Joey Linton
Like I said a week or two back he's playing his part still, we just aren't totally reliant on him any more like we were under Bruce.
TRon
1 hour ago, David Edgar said: Bench him. The team doesn't need his individual moments to succeed and he has become more of a liability than anything. And replace him with who? I get that he is very frustrating, there's no way he would ever play for City or Liverpool, but you aren't going to improve our side by playing Murphy. Yorkie
Was treated to the emphatic musings of the anti-Maxi club in the East Stand today like. Was all you could hear for sequences of the second half. He wasn't good again but fucking hell, if I was violent...
ponsaelius
As ever the bloke who spends most of the game with the ball trying stuff (and yes ultimately failing) gets more stick than the players literally doing fuck all. It's tedious as fuck to be honest.

Aiston
Playing too poorly lately. Struggling to take people on and 95% of the decisions he is making are the wrong ones. Sell him though...what Edited April 17, 2022 by Aiston

The Butcher
He's not hiding even if very little comes off atm. Stick with him and he'll turn it around.

midds
With Wood as a CF then players like ASM are not going to flourish. Let's be kind and say Wood is static, ASM is very mobile and needs movement to mesh with and that's very low down on the list of Wood's skillset. He also has to cope with the fact the opposition know they need to double up and can afford to due to the lack of other options in the final third. Snuff out the threat asap by swamping and surrounding him and you don't need to worry about Wood and Fraser/Almiron as they'll not get the ball. Improve the CF, get a much better RF/RW and an additional AM and he'll look much better. He needs options and movement and a bit more space. He's fucking infuriating but there's context, it's not all his fault but it often appears that it is.

That's one thing he does well in fairness and always has. He doesn't hide from the ball or shy away from trying to create, no matter how bad a game he is having. Can see how he celebrates both goals that he has the passion for this club/ his teammates .

The point about Wood I agree with 100% too. You're not going to get much interchangeable running between ASM and Wood.
joeyt
I did think the decision to put him up front hindered us. It was a weird 10/15 mins of play where we really didn't have any foothold in the game and couldn't get any possesion Gayle brought some pressing back to our frontline for the brief time he was one

joeyt
There was an article on The Athletic last week about how Gayle is apparently the best player in training https://theathletic.com/3238247/2022/04/11/if-dwight-gayle-is-newcastle-uniteds-best-player-in-training-why-does-he-never-get-a-game/
