I wonder how binding that is ? And a Madrid Court giving Real what it wants, who'd a thunk it.

Just a theory...half baked probably, but couldn't UEFA/FIFA just the say that ESL teams and players are their own Federation and therefore not allowed to compete in UEFA/FIFA competitions? Eg you don't see River Plate/Sao Paulo saying they're being punished by not being allowed in the Champions League, or Brazil/Argentina not being in the Euros?

They might not be able to directly punish them, but surely can exclude without the court forcing them to change their own rules.

"The regulator will have the power to prevent English clubs from joining new competitions that do not meet a predetermined criteria, in consultation with the FA and fans," said the government.

"That criteria could include measures to stop clubs participating in closed-shop breakaway competitions which harm the domestic game, such as the European Super League."

Tory Govt forcing socialism on football is a hell of trip

It feels odd writing it, but I’m glad the govt has acted - it’s about three decades too late (and all previous govts have that responsibility too), but at long last there is an attempt at independent regulation.

English football has always had an odd regulatory structure, given the separation between the FA and the Football League (and now to an extent the FA-backed breakaway PL).  I wish this had been done prior to 1992, but nowt can be done on that now.

Blocking of a ESL obviously has been the final straw and forced regulation, but I’d happily see a lot of the damage done to the national game rolled back.  I also don’t give a solitary shite if it impacts the ‘standing’ of the PL nor performances in Europe.  The pyramid is utterly broken and needs fixing.  I’m also unmoved if in the medium- to long-term this includes the forceable sale of clubs out of the hands of dubious characters.  And yes, I’m aware that this could impact NUFC.

I think a more equal distribution of wealth between the Premier League and the EPL is a positive step. That can surely be done while still retaining the competitiveness of English clubs within Europe, although the status might change from one of dominance to just a position of advantage. The current situation does encourage clubs to take financial risks to get promotion to the Premiership, or avoid relegation.

There are already spending controls within the Premiership in the form of FFP - there just needs to be proper enforcement.

I find the proposals to increase the say of supporter groups rather naive and unrealistic. Clubs have to be run as sustainable businesses, and supporter groups don't usually have the knowledge or expertise to get involved. What's more, a club's supporters tend to be focused on their own team's success, rather than the good of the game as a whole. Most don't seem to care about where the money has come from, the fairness of wealth distribution, or even their own club's long-term outlook, providing there's success on the field.

I imagine in the end that the influence of these groups will only extend to issues like the naming of stadiums and the colour of shirts etc, which feels like meddling.

I notice the press keep mentioning our takeover being one of the reasons why this has come to fruition.

However, I genuinely think it would have gotten our takeover done quicker. The farce of how the premier league kicked the can down for the road and refused to make a decision was scandalous and there’s no way a Tory govt would’ve pissed off a major contributor to our economy like SA by acting the same way.

Funny because the legislation is going to review the fit and proper tests but exclude moral issues as a reason to block a takeover. So our takeover which is so morally incorrect apparently has highlighted the red tape that could occur to block a takeover and as such the legislation is changing to ensure any other morally incorrect takeovers go through smoother. 3 cheers for capitalism!

It was confirmed yesterday that the new legislation wouldn’t have had any impact on our takeover too. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/feb/23/white-paper-would-not-block-qatari-buyout-of-manchester-united

Gambling addiction is absolutely brutal and any form of gambling advertisement should be banned completely from football. If you want to put a bet on then do so, you know how to do it. You shouldn’t be getting it thrown at you if you want to enjoy a game though. They should ban those half time adverts showing odds as well tbh.

Aye, it's disgusting the amount of betting ads one has to endure if you want to watch a game of football. It's in your face all the time, before, during, after, half time. Absolutely no wonder there are loads who struggle with betting addiction, must be awful for anyone who has a problem with it. Basically have to stop watching football to avoid being bombarded with the latest odds etc.

It's basically this, but with betting instead of alcohol:
