Copa America

Brilliant. That’s what happens when you’re proper determined and refuse to give up despite set back after set back. So many lost finals, but they’re all history now.

No more “He never won anything for his country” nonsense. Great to see.

Messi has now won more Copa Americas than Pele and Maradona combined.

That's astonishing.

Delighted for Messi, he deserved to win something with his country given the enormous - probably never to be matched/beaten - gift to the game he has been.

Messi deserved it and very happy for him. :aww: Now that won't hold him back when compared to Cristiano in the future (never should have, but now it definitely won't, although let's be honest here, the Copa America doesn't mean as much as the Euro's given how often it is played). As for the game, Argentina just wanted it far more than Brazil. Was a poor game and Argentina is an extremely limited side nowadays, but their willpower and obviously an individual error won them the game. That was a champions mentality they had for the 25 last minutes, whether you hate it or love it it usually works to be dirty and kill the game off every 2 minutes. I wish we had that in us, unfortunately under Tite we've won two Fair Play awards instead

It's really not though. Not sure about Maradona, but as a comparison. Pelé played 1 Copa America as a 19 year old, scoring 8 goals, being player of the tournament and not winning it due to a draw against Argentina in Argentina with 85k fans. Messi on the other hand has played 6 Copa America, so at some point he should've won at least one, and let's be honest he should've won at least 3 of them given the talent he has played with.

Mad to think what Messi could have won with Argentina with a moment going the other way here or there or with Higuain finishing properly. It could have been 3 Copa Americas and a World Cup I think. Great to see him finally get one with Argentina which is probably a weird way to look at it when it's a team sport, but he's had so much 'hasn't done it with Argentina' noncesense for years that its good to see that one ticked off the list. It seems fitting that it was probably the worst performance I've seen him have in a final that ended up being the one where they won. Am I right in thinking that the World Cup is now the only trophy he's been in contention for that he hasn't won?

That final was a masterclass in fouling, diving and all round shithousery. If you didn't have a good first touch you got nailed. Referee was superb and handled it really well . recognised the diving and just told people to get up. argentina just did enough to edge it.

Copa starting.

The first one I made a point of watching was 95 and its etched in my mind like fingers down a blackboard Martin Tyler saying "they call him Dolgeta, the Goal -getter"  I remember thinking 'I bet they don't, in a Spanish speaking, call him something that makes sense and rhymes with his name in English'

Dolgeta the Conseguidor de objetivos doesn't have the same ring to it
