A lot of them actually claim to fly from Teesside as their club are official partners with them now, except for the flights that don’t exists, then they either got to Manchester, or come to Woolsington/Prudhoe East Airport decked in red & white like a 50’s beach chair.

Out of interest what would the point of having Ryhiad Air establishing a hub here?

Can't imagine many people want to go to Saudi...

They plan to cover 100 destinations from the UK by 2030, is my thinking.

It could be a route to the rest of the world though, a little like Dubai.

The success of the Emirates route is always going to be a problem for Saudi getting flights established out of NCL. If they own the airport then there’s a greater chance of it being jettisoned in favour of a Saudia alternative.

There is zero chance of them having a hub out of Newcastle.

A route maybe, but again, the demand wouldn’t exactly be large. The tourist demand to Saudi isn’t very big, compared to Dubai. The North East doesn’t even have a Muslim population large enough to justify a pilgrim to Mecca route.

Any route to Saudi would be relying in freight to/from the Middle East, and Asia, and onward travel.

There's nothing in that actual article about Riyadh Air or in the Times one, it's just someone putting 2 + 2 and getting 5.

PIF will probably be looking simply purchasing the Infrabridge stake who are selling, they also bought 15% of heathrow.

Not sure what the Muslim population is in Newcastle and surrounding areas but many Muslims travel to Saudi for the Hajj and Umrah (pilgrimage).

Hajj is before the second Eid of the year and Umrah which is like Hajj but performed anytime outside of the Hajj period.

edit:

Seems like 9% in Newcastle.

The Muslim population is low in the North East - the amount of people that go on the Pilgrimage is fairly low as well - both Hajj and Ummrah are quite expensive too - so they won’t really benefit - but may benefit from direct flights to Pakistan from various cities in UK (Manchester - Birmingham - London) as there is a huge demand

The numbers allowed on Hajj is restricted, and each country gets a quota.  At the moment, the UK is allowed 3,500 pilgrims per year.

Even if they were all flying out of Newcastle (doubtful), it’s not exactly huge numbers.

Wouldn't mind trying a MEL>RUY>NCL route next time I come home.

Anything is better than the fucking charvers teaparty that is the Dubai to Newcastle flight on Emirates these days.

I wouldn't pay for that Emirates flight because the prices have gone through the roof over the last year or so; the thought of being trapped next to Gaz Beadle wannabes reduces the appeal further.  The appeal of Dubai is absolutely lost on me.
