Really hope yesterday was the first staging post on fixing the away from home piece longer term. We'll still lose games on the road of course, but if we're playing like we did yesterday more often than not we'll come away with results.

Third best defensive record in the league currently.

That's a surprise tbh, maybe down to the poor quality of some of the goals we've conceded. But one quote I read yesterday really struck a chord with me. He said at half time he was unhappy because our build up was too slow, and he wanted us to pass forward quicker. I think this has actually had a big impact on players like Longstaff,  who left to his own devices would pass sideways all day. Since he's come back in the team he's looked a lot more positive. Even if he's missing some of the passes, it makes the team function better and probably bumps his confidence.

That one he knocked with the outside of his foot that just went too far for isak was a good example of that. Rather see him making attempts of passes like that, than taking 4 or 5 touches and killing us everytime like he sometimes does

Annoying, was coming here to say something like this.

Away wins last season and this:

8-0 vs Sheffield United

3-0 vs Man Utd

3-0 vs Sunderland

2-0 vs Fulham

3-1 vs Villa

3-2 vs Forest

1-1 vs Blackburn (won on pens)

1-0 vs Fulham

4-1 vs Burnley

4-2 vs Brentford

1-1 vs Forest (won on pens)

2-1 vs Wolves

3-1 vs Forest

Notable draws in both Milan and Paris, too.

Not playing down the issue because clearly it's been a big one at times, but we've certainly had far leaner times on the road than this.

The fucker last season was ending up with zero points so many times, when literally one would have been extremely useful. A draw at Stamford Bridge and we'd have been playing FC Noah last week.

We hit really good form at the end of last season, went from ~16th to 10th in the away table. We were winning both home and away at that point. Before january 30th our away for was quite dreadful with just a couple of exceptions. I think the performances at Bournemouth, Wolves and Fulham alltogether gave us a bit of flashback to the first 2/3rds of last season, except from the fact that we actually beat Wolves.

The interesting thing about Eddie being English is that the PL era just hasn't had many great English managers. The top four are probably Keegan, SBR, Redknapp, and Hodgson in some order, so Eddie has a chance to establish himself as the best English manager of his generation and give Newcastle a bit of a monopoly on top English managers of the last 30+ years.

We've only played five games, three of them away, and one of the home games largely with 10 men so many, many caveats apply. That said, the stats at the moment show what we're seeing - opponents are spending far more time in our penalty area, we're struggling to get the ball forward and into dangerous positions, we are easy to play against (2nd worst in the league in tackles + interceptions behind only City, who just defend by having the ball), and we're sloppy.

In 2022/23 we were 4th in the league in touches in opp. penalty area.

In 2023/24 we were 5th.

This season we are 18th (closer to Ipswich in 20th than Everton in 12th)

In 2022/23 we had the 2nd fewest touches in our own penalty area and opponents had the 5th fewest touches.

In 2023/24 we had the 5th fewest and 8th fewest, respectively.

This season we have the third most touches in our own penalty area and opponents have the 2nd most touches in our box.

In 2022/23 we were 6th in progressive carries into the penalty area.

In 2023/24 we were 8th.

This season we are 14th.

In 2022/23 we were 4th in passes into the penalty area.

In 2023/24 we were 5th

This season we are 12th.

In 2022/23 we had the 6th fewest number of clearances.

In 2023/24 we also had the 6th fewest.

This season we have the 4th most.

In 2022/23 we were 6th in shot creating actions.

In 2023/24 we were 7th.

This season we are 15th.

In 2022/23 we committed nine errors all season (mistakes leading to a shot), which was 4th best.

In 2023/24 we committed 16 errors, which was tied for 8th best.

This season we have committed six errors already, tied for the most.

In 2022/23 we were 1st in aerial duels won % (56%).

In 2023/24 we were 6th (52%).

This season we are 6th (52.4%).

In 2022/23 we faced the 5th fewest crosses into the penalty area and had the 4th highest % of crosses stopped by the GK (7.9%).

In 2023/24 we faced the 6th fewest crosses and had the 10th highest % of them stopped by the GK (6.7%).

This season we have faced the most crosses into the penalty area and have the 6th worst % of crosses stopped by the GK (4.7%).

When I posted these stats we had just lost to Fulham. It had only been five games, but it was concerning how far we had dropped off from prior seasons. Since then we've played City, Everton, Brighton, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Forest, and we've improved in every single metric:

  • We are now up to 12th in touches in opp. penalty area (previously 18th).
  • We are now 12th in touches in our own penalty area (previously 18th).
  • We are joint 10th in carries into the penalty area (previously 14th).
  • We are 9th in passes into the penalty area (previously 12th).
  • We have the 9th fewest clearances (previously 4th most).
  • We are 12th in shot creating actions (previously 15th).
  • We have now made 11 errors that led to a shot (which is one more than all of 2022/23) and is joint second worst (previously joint worst).
  • We are 4th in aerial duels won, 53%. (previously 5th at 52.4%)
  • We have faced the 9th fewest crosses into our penalty area (previously the most) and have the 6th best % of crosses stopped by the GK, 7.8% (previously 6th worst, 4.7%).
  • We are 11th in tackles won + interceptions (previously 19th) and slightly more per 90 than each of the last two seasons.

Let's see where we are at the halfway point. Given the form and fixtures I'm optimistic we'll continue trending up.

guessing that outside of the top 2-3 teams, away form is all over the place in this day and age of the PL?

If its this calendar year, Spurs (teerible) and Brighton (bad) don't have good records on their travels. Villa's is pretty good, despite the drop off at the end of last season.

In eleven games, we've only scored four times in the first half. We've been losing at half time six times. In the second half, goals for and against is 9-3. Chelsea are the only team to ourscore us in the second half.

Arsenal is the only time we’ve scored in the first 30 minutes of a game. We definitely need to stop making things difficult for ourselves.

Score early/first in some of the games coming up and we may be back to some of the very fun scorelines.

I know it’s daft, but it’s nice to see him and Mitchell sat together after all the stuff in the summer.

If these two come to some sort of understanding there will be no stopping us.
