I always thought Kinnear would have kept us up that year.

He would have. Laughing stock he was and despite the footy being pretty bleak, we were drawing a lot of games and ticking towards the total we would have needed.

We were utterly dreadful under Hughton's caretakership and completely absent as an attacking force under Shearer until the Boro game by which point the damage was all but done.

Kinnear as manager was my personal lowest ebb as a supporter. Any improvement would be brief, and any low wouldn't, or couldn't, possibly be lower. From a European side a couple of years before, to hiring a fucking Neanderthal (who'd been out of the game for almost a decade) a couple of years later, the game was absolutely up. NUFC would be on a downward trajectory for many a year

It was the, "in charge for 3 games" to "extended to 8 games" to "end of the season" within the space of a couple of weeks that was annoying.

Then appointing him DoF a few years later. Jesus.

So did I strangely.

Likewise - though that is not in praise of Kinnear's abilities.  We needed only six points from the remaining eight games to stay up - or 0.75 points per game: the equavalent of a 29 point season.  Kinnear was averaging 1.1 ppg - which is bottom half of midtable form; so we only needed average relegation form to stay up.  Shearer managed 0.625 ppg, which is a 24-point season.  We really should not have went down that season.

We returned to type under Shearer vs Fulham and Villa after that game vs the smoggies.  As dislikable as many of that squad was, much of what came out suggests that Shearer and Dowie were utterly useless.

I'm glad Shearer didn't get the opportunity to damage his reputation in the second tier - and Ashley was right not to offer him the job

Really believe that the club needs to put out a statement that we will no longer be answering any questions on the Isak situation at press conferences or in interviews.

Eddie is being subjected to a half-hour interrogation before every match and being asked to comment on how he, Isak, the rest of the players, the fans and the Board might be feeling. That is dangerous ground when the topic is so emotive.

It is not in the club’s interest and merely feeds the media frenzy which simply exacerbates the issue. And if he stays this is just going to carry on until he leaves and beyond.

He is doing a great diplomatic job but is still feeding the stories which will be used by the media to support their narratives. Such will be the case with the “news” that he was made aware of Isak’s concerns before the season ended.

Liverpool must be loving all the noise being created as it unsettles Isak more,  adds to any divisions at Newcastle (players, fans etc) and potentially reduces isak’s value.

I get where you're coming from but if we withdraw from the media battleground (where this has been almost entirely played out) then we surrender the initiative. Howe hasn't just been diplomatic, he's reinforced that we actually hold the cards in this deal - including by continuing to publicise that Isak can return.

It's a shame that the boss has to fuck about with this rubbish but ultimately it's actually one of his strengths as a manager.

There's probably a half way where he just goes "I'm going to answer this one question on Isak, and no more" and use that one question to get his/the clubs message out.

Love Eddie and well done for getting us back into it but honestly at times it looks like we haven't had any pre-season, still trying to figure out our positions and what to do with set pieces, you don't win football games by running a lot and lunging into tackles, i'm sure he won't be happy with a lot of what he saw today.
