Memphis
From this Athletic piece on Eddie Howe's rugby-style kickoffs into touch... The players didn't want to kick the ball into touch to start the second half against Liverpool, even though that was the agreed-upon plan. They backed themselves to be able to keep the ball. So Eddie Howe gave them a chance. That last paragraph is to me what makes Howe so special as a coach. He allowed his players to make what he suspected was a mistake in order to show them a larger point about making proper decisions under pressure. That method of teaching is so much more effective than screaming or yelling or stamping your feet and demanding that players do it your way or else. The players had their chance to make a decision, it was a poor one and it cost the team, and now they can see it very clearly. HalloNUFC
He took a big gamble with frontline trio who blanked in all 3 opening matches. We win it or Eddieout

Newcastle Fan
Fucking idotic choice to start that front three in this game. Would've barley worked against Bradford.
Vinny Green Balls
FFS I think it's clear that he is concerned with burning Woltemade out too early. The dude was cramping up for much of his appearance last weekend.

Pilko
Wish he'd pack in Gordon as a striker, or at all in fact. Just isn't working. I'd be open to seeing Elanga there instead for games like today. Tough one tonight, their quality just outshone ours second half. Would be nice if he could pull out an Eddie masterclass at the weekend rather than the usual shoeing we get against Bournemouth.
1892er
Hopefully this is the end of Gordon as CF. Guy hasn't scored since January.

TheBrownBottle
We need pretty much all of our best players fit and on form to have a chance of beating the top sides, and we don’t, so I just think we suck it up and move on quickly. I don’t ever want to see Gordon at CF again, mind - it just doesn’t work against any opposition, never mind Barca.
ToonAbroad
Hopefully he brings in a few fresh legs for Bournemouth - Hall, Elanga, Murphy, Willock, Thiaw & Botman all need to start for me (and Woltemade of course).
Gallowgate Toon
I think he'll rue not starting Woltemade as we missed that presence, and then the game was largely gone for most of his time on it. We do need to be sensible with rotating but there are multiple ways to manage it.

Famous Nick
he needs more experience at CL level but so far quite unlucky with draw, he managed 7 CL games, 2x Psg, 2x Dortmund, 2x Milan, 1x Barca, these are all CL QF or semifinal level opponents more or less. we didnt have yet the mediocre sides in CL, well soon we have the likes of Union, Benfica, Bilbao, Leverkusen, PSV level which is where should be favourites mostly. we need to get enough points in next 6 CL games tho as the 8th game is PSG away. this PSG is levels above the one we faced last time. I think 11-12 points enough to advance albeit that leaves vs a strong opponent in playoff round only, but 11-12 points has to be collected from next 6 CL games. Union, PSV are the absolute must wins and Leverkusen too given their squad weakened big time and manager left. this Gordon upfront stuff, we need to use this maybe vs promoted sides and Carabao and thats it. I dont like it, I would rather throw in Osula.
The Prophet
Thought the tactics were fine. Was a bit bemused by Elanga coming off on the hour mark, but decent other than that.
Yorkie
I think anyone digging him out for the team selection is being very harsh, like. The reasons for why we had to play Gordon there are incredibly obvious, and there is a universe where he doesn't play so poorly in that game. We needed him for the press and intensity and, tbf, he delivered on that score for the most part. I don't think there's any guarantee we win with Woltemade on the pitch instead. If we're being critical for anything then making so many changes at once would be it. Even if it was just three (as intended before the additional Thiaw one), it was too significant a change to our setup at precisely the wrong time. They were securing their foothold as we were trying to grasp the new shape. Really contributed to that long spell where we couldn't seem to do shit. 80
Given one of my concerns for this season was that he wasn't going to rotate our players much to deal with all the competitions, I can't really complain too much. A fresh, competent striker starting and it would've been a different game. Edited September 18, 2025 by
joeyt
Didn't think the starting xi was the wrong decision. You could see the game plan and if for better passing and finishing could have been a different story
