timeEd32
We brushed aside Bilbao and especially Benfica like they didn’t even belong on a pitch with us and no one enjoyed it because it was at home, the format is less satisfying to some, and they were sandwiched between losses away to Brighton, West Ham, and Brentford. Optimistic Nut
I think we'd beat most non-English clubs. They're not used to playing against teams with our intensity. We probably should have been a couple up v Barcelona before their first goal. Edited February 21 by Optimistic Nut
TheBrownBottle
I very much think that Howe has built a side (and is a coach) well-equipped for cup football - it’s what Spurs had a reputation for when I was a kid. Howe thrives in these one-off matches when everything is on the line and we see far more innovation in the cups than in the league (I’m not saying he’s a bad league coach before anyone has a go). I’ll sound delusional here but I really think NUFC can go deep into any cup competition including the old European Cup (though no-one should be upset if we go out in the next round). There’s no-one in our side of the draw to the SF that we couldn’t beat over two legs. Edited February 20 by TheBrownBottle

But it was more than relatively comfortable. It was a piece of piss. Especially as most were expecting a hard game. They barely had a chance in 90 minutes. Even Benfica and Bilbao had their moments. Each to their own but I think you're forgetting that to finish in a Champions League spot last season was a massive achievement (like the time before). I don't see how Howe could have done better in the league since he's been here.

That, together with saying he's a built a team for cup games, reminds you of Spurs is underplaying how good he's been in the league. At least that's how I read your message. He’s obviously a good league coach - I wrote that to make it clear I wasn’t looking to write off his league coaching. But I think good cup coaches require a slightly different skill set. Howe has both.
alexf
Nothing reveals the degradation of European football to me more than Fenerbache getting dicked at home 0:3 by a Nottingham Forrest team near the foot of the table. Just always felt like an away tie in CL to a Turkish side was a hostile atmosphere and they would give some of the best teams in Europe a proper game. Now they are in the Europa and getting slapped comfortably by one of the weakest teams in England this year.

They should be a top half team given their talent

TBG
"All I hear is how much of a nice guy Eddie Howe is. All I hear is how he's one of the good ones in football. If he's really that nice, yeah, right, he wouldn't kick a team when it's down. It's a disgrace what he did to Qarabag the other night. Factor in tonight's embarrassment and once again I'm ashamed to be a Newcastle supporter Speaking of being embarrassed. Are you struggling with erectile disfunction? Real Madrid lost to Osasuna today, and they are top of their league. Chelsea drew with Burnley at home, and they are club world cup champions. PSG lost to Rennes 3-1 last week, current champions League holders. Arsenal drew 2-2 away from home to Wolves, who are top of our league. Those results happen, no matter the team or manager.
