I think he has the ability to be elite but he is super conservative and puts not loosing as his first priority, probably because of years trying to avoid relegation with Bournemouth and then the first season and a half with us.

I would love it if he just went fuck it and went for a win everytime, crazy formations and tactics and just blasted teams away, I think we have seen that occasionally but he seems to revert back to the safety first mindset too often.

Give me a super kev all out attack side any time, football is supposed to be fun but the whole league is boring as fuck now.

Yep come on guys, lay off Howe, if it wasn't for them bloody late goals, or us not scoring late goals, or goals conceded at any time really, we'd have not lost a game and won the league man.

How is it his fault we kept conceding late goals, nothing to do with how he set up the team at all like.

It's all just been bad luck, any other season we'd have gone unbeaten.

When it happens time after time its not unluck. We also have played very poor, not just the results.

The big concern for me is we had 7 games after the international and fa cup break to turn the season round. We had 1 tough game but 13 points looked on for us.

We took 7 points and looked terrible in every game apart from the West Ham game

The season was over for the players by then.

Saying that he's in the last-chance saloon now implies that he's at fault for this season's problems. I don't think he is, and he should be starting next season with a clean slate. If we end up struggling again, then any decision will depend on what the reasons are for that new setback. But let's not heap pressure on the guy at this stage. That won't help.

I hated the final months of this season, not because of the results, but because of the reaction to those results, in the media and amongst many supporters. I'm haunted by the memory of what happened to Sir Bob. He took us from the relegation zone to 4th and 3rd place, and then when we slipped to 5th everyone seemed to be calling for his head. They got their way, but what a fantastic decision that turned out to be.

Many years ago, as a teenager, I read Arthur Hopcraft's 'The Football Man' - still the best book about football that I've ever read. In the section on Managers, this statement leapt out at me at the time - 'past success is only briefly a glad memory; it quickly becomes an accusing finger'. That's what happened to Sir Bob and I'm reliving the nightmare of it potentially happening to Eddie.

I console myself with the thought that our Saudi Chairman has a good grasp of the situation and isn't just giving Eddie 'another chance'. I think he knows the value of what he has and is giving him his full support.

Not this again. Almost nobody was calling for his head. All anybody ever tends to produce to substantiate this is that the ground was half empty for a walk around (as it was in 2000/01) and it was four months after that that he was sacked. In the meantime he was retiring at the end of the following season anyway (even Sir Bobby himself accepted the time was coming to hand it over, the plan was to bring someone in to understudy him in 2003 to eventually take over), we hadn't won in 10games or something like that, were near enough bottom of the league, in obvious decline, players were downing tools and Shearer had been dropped. The fans four months earlier were a insignificant factor at best in that decision.

Find "finishing 5th" always misleading too, in itself that's fine, 6th was good under KK, but finishing outside the Champions League places as it had become was catastrophic.

It shouldn’t have been, even if we beat Forest and Fulham this month we get Europe.

One of my favourite forum memes is when someone is too shit to be effectively sarcastic and someone else is too thick to realise it’s a shit attempt at sarcasm.

Aye, I'm baffled by the lack of looking back at what went before. Mind you most people live in the now, so it's not surprising.

I don’t mean originality I just mean evolution.

It’s largely the same ideas again and again. The same basic midfield profile for 3 years. Same winger profiles for 3 years.  Largely doing the same things.

Like Klopp knew his team needed a little more ability in midfield. Got Thiago then started adding more technicians. Arsenal size and strength maxxing then set piece maxing when they started as old school Pep clones.

I evolve, but I don't ....... revolve. Or vice-versa. I suppose what you're trying to say is, you don't want another Alan Pardew on your hands.

I'm sure its been posted in the last 10 pages or so, but our last full season under Bruce we finished 12th, losing 17 games. c£700m(?) later on signings and we are back where we started, albeit with a trophy and two CL campaigns along the way. But the fact is we are back to the 20-21 position.

If the club are serious about their 2030 ambitions then no way Howe survives the next couple of weeks.

Following being knocked out of all three cup competitions and mackem loss I thought he would be gone if he didn't take advantage of the lighter schedule and relatively easy on paper run in to have a strong finish. If anything, we've looked worse than at any point this season.

The whole ‘we used to be even more shit so this is ok’ doesn’t really wash anymore mind.

But I do agree with others - a fresh start and clean slate for everyone next season, but we absolutely must get off to a fast (ish) start with some good performances to boot. The football served up at times this season has been fucking dire, though granted not exclusive to us.

I just don't believe things work so linearly, to say we're exactly where we are in 20/21 based solely on league position just isn't accurate at all in my opinion

What? Super conservative? We have one of the worst defenses in the league.
