Clubs hoping to sign Mikel Merino this summer are understood to be facing a delay with Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez unwilling to part with the midfielder unless a replacement is signed.

Benitez is currently assessing his squad options but there could be more positive news later this week with Nottingham Forest interested in signing Jack Colback on a permanent deal.

La Liga trio Real Betis, Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad are all fighting to take the Spanish Under-21 back to his home country in the summer window.

The interested clutch of clubs believe a fee of around £10million will be enough to lure the former Borussia Dortmund man to Spain before the season kicks off.

Such a price tag would earn United a £3million profit but Benitez will not sanction any sale until he has signed a replacement.

Merino knows he will kick off pre-season as third choice in the club’s battle for midfield places and Benitez is keen to bring in a player that will challenge Mo Diame and Jonjo Shelvey for his two coveted engine room slots.

The Magpies have been linked with moves for a host of midfield men so far in this window including Juventus midfielder Stefano Sturaro, Swansea City’s Roque Mesa, and once capped Croatian international Lovro Majer.

But despite efforts to sign a plethora of players so far this summer, Benitez is finding it tough to get to grips with Newcastle’s lowly budget.

Chronicle Live reported last week that Benitez will be shopping in the bargain basement for the majority of his summer buys and while there is hope behind the scenes there will be at least one arrival that will impress fans, the Toon boss is working tirelessly with his contacts to find players who are available at knockdown prices.

Newcastle United's open access media policy came long before England thought of it

Colback spent last season on loan at Forest and his departure would clear a large chunk off the club’s wage budget with the midfielder currently draining £40,000 per week out of United’s coffers.

The City Ground side could sign Colback by the end of June.

Forest boss Aitor Karanka said: “I hope we can bring in a few more players, before we report back on the 25th.

“When we finished the season I said I would like to start pre-season with as many of the new players as possible.”

Not a bad shout that actually. Would probably take him, certainly better than what we have.

Ideally he would replace Gayle and we would bring in someone else as well like.

Ayew joking?

I'd hope we could do better than him.

He's better than Gayle & Joselu so it would at least be an upgrade. We've been linked with worse.

never seen the point in either of those ayews at all, flashes but never consistent...no thanks

Andre was really good for a time, but he has really sharply declined the past few seasons. Jordan is the better one now, but even he is just an average and wildly inconsistent forward. I don't mind if they can get him fairly cheaply to be second choice, because the guy is still superior to Joselu and probably also Gayle. The club needs to buy at least two forwards if Mitrovic is going.
