Justdoesit
Hmf. I half hope he has a great run in form where we will think this is great business and he joins his mate at Liverpool for an exaggerated fee. The other half of me remembers how great he is, and how we beat AC Milan to his signature. Himself and Thiaw would be ridiculous, all firing.

I know he was fantastic for us when he first arrived, but so was Willock once upon a time. Injuries fuck up a lot of careers sadly.

Zero
I think we all know why the contract was not extended for long, until now when he has a poor run of form. The new contract was on the table for nearly a year I guess. We do need him now since Schar and Burn are aging. But honestly we should continue to find someone who is better than Botman. He isn’t good enough or reliable enough to be our long term starting CB.

I won't stretch to say I am confident that he will do, especially if he's playing 120 minutes and then another 90 back-to-back right after injury, but contract is signed now he can focus on getting back to his best with no distraction. r0cafella
Probably the right thing to do as long as his wage isn't insane. We have to protect the value at the end of the day. Im not convinced he will be able to get back to his old level though so I hope the club is pragmatic about things.

Maybe the medical staff and coaches who work with him day to day have a better idea about his prospects? Also he’s had one major injury/surgery, the other injuries while they’ve kept him out for medium periods aren’t serious. Players go on to play well after ACL reconstructions - Callum Wilson (had two), Van Dijk, our own Tino currently
Optimistic Nut
9 hours ago, Yorkie said: Would be lunacy not to extend. Lascelles is finished. Schär is 34 and out of contract, Burn will be 34 later this season and is out of contract next year. We could do without having to recruit 3/4 CBs like. That's before we get onto the fact he's a class player and was demonstrating that he's arguably the best in the squad as recently as earlier this season. Touched on it in the Transfer thread, as great as Schar & Burn have been/still are, we probably should have looked to move one of them on in the summer and brought in a younger defender while we still had the other, plus Botman & Thiaw. We're going to need to replace them both shortly which will cost a helluva lot of money to sign someone capable of pushing for a first-team spot immediately, and it's not ideal to bring two with potential behind just the two senior CBs. There’d have been absolute murders if we’d moved Burn on in the summer. He’s literally a current England international who’s probably playing the best football of his career. He’s probably got minimum two years left at this level. Bit more of an argument with Schar, but I think we were all happy enough with him being extended. olliemort
Wouldn’t mind burn as cover but no way should he be near the starting 11 if we what to be challenging. Since he’s being out injured it’s no coincidence despite having a number of other injured players we have gone on a good run. In the past this is what I held us back… showing loyalty to some players. Schar on the other hand if he can recover well absolutely should be kept on, he was playing great football till he got injured
BrickTop
When the players in the dressing room are asked about who the best is at certain attributes Botman is still frequently mentioned post-injury. He is a very good player who is coming back from a spell of injuries. I'm pleased the club have taken the optimistic approach on this one, I see Thiaw and Botman as the future partnership. Things can change fast at that age. If anything it's maximum two years considering how slow he already is.

So I think it's just fair that some of us are a bit sceptical about this. But as I said previous, hopefully it will work out. Not ruling that out at all.
