I think if we are around 30 and they have said 38, we just go in, no messing as it might get others tempted and of course we may piss them off if we haggle further.

Soon as he's signed we go for Botman.

We're not giving up in a hurry, got to like that. Botman sounded like it was dead in the water, but who knows? Maybe if we chuck enough money at it....

So we had bid £40-50m but now they "only" want 38?

Sounds like Staveley and Co know how to negotiate a deal, who'd have thought it eh after that last fuckin charlatan and his thumb headed side kick.

As it stands we can spend something like £300-500m on transfer fees before we hit FFP issues. The biggest blow to our FFP position would be relegation, we need to do whatever it takes to avoid that.

That's 10 players at these prices - It's not even a full squad. We need to spend wisely, and if we can save a few million here and there we absolutely should.

Obviously avoiding relegation is paramount though.

I imagine that £38 million is how much they are wanting upfront.

That offer of 55 million Euros, likely came with a bunch of clauses and caveats and was probably just £25 million upfront.

Don’t remember us bidding £40m-£50m? If referring to that Tweet it was what they were preparing/hoping for not what they’d received was the way I translated it. We probably know now how much they need to buy Martial and have held firm.

We only need point them to our track record of sending shit players to Spain and them flourishing like Joselu. Think of the profit they could make off Clark or Lascelles.

p.s. don't mention Muto.

How good is Carlos?

This is a defender who is primarily about carrying the ball and passing it, as opposed to winning it back.

Per fbref, he is comparable to Juventus defender Matthijs De Ligt statistically and is excellent at bringing the ball out of defence and distributing it to his team-mates.

But in terms of his defensive numbers, they are actually pretty poor.

He is in the bottom 50 per cent of defenders across Europe’s top five leagues when it comes to pressures, tackles, interceptions, clearances, and aerial duels won.

It is debatable as to whether he will be able to improve Newcastle on his own; this is a player who thrives when his team has the ball. Newcastle often don’t have the ball.

At £30m, this deal for Carlos feels like something of a gamble, even if he is coming in from a top club in a top league.

And no Koundé to partner him. I'm trying to figure out why Howe wants him so much.

There's more to defending than stats are often able to show, like. You can't really measure positional sense, tactical understanding, leadership and organisation in stats. Mobility, and the resulting ability to play a higher line, is also crucial in the modern game for a central defender and is something we're completely bereft of.

We’ve been a soft touch at the back for some time, opposing teams feel quite comfortable hassling and getting at our defenders because sooner or later they crack.

This guy will not be a pushover, he will need help for sure but he’ll bring a calmness to the back that we haven’t had. Also has excellent distribution.

So we bid 25 million, then 28 probably and then upped it to 30, got him to hand in a transfer request and now his agents are at the club piling on the pressure.

Grim Ballbag says it will take 50-60 million for them to sell.

We get him for 38.

Now if only we could have negotiated with Burnley like that!

Burnley would have held out for £25mill.
