Per fbref, he is comparable to Juventus defender Matthijs De Ligt statistically and is excellent at bringing the ball out of defence and distributing it to his team-mates. But in terms of his defensive numbers, they are actually pretty poor. He is in the bottom 50 per cent of defenders across Europe’s top five leagues when it comes to pressures, tackles, interceptions, clearances, and aerial duels won. It is debatable as to whether he will be able to improve Newcastle on his own; this is a player who thrives when his team has the ball. Newcastle often don’t have the ball. You can't really measure positional sense, tactical understanding, leadership and organisation in stats. Mobility, and the resulting ability to play a higher line, is also crucial in the modern game for a central defender and is something we're completely bereft of. This guy will not be a pushover, he will need help for sure but he’ll bring a calmness to the back that we haven’t had. Also has excellent distribution.
