Just listening to Eddie's interview in full. This is a very interesting quote:

‘You have to be adaptable because if we can’t find the right player, I might have to look at other positions. We are looking at quality players who will make the group better, regardless of position.’

I never heard it growing up in Newcastle (born 89) that I can remember - first I probably heard of it was on this board.

20 years older than you and heard it in Gateshead as a youth, but just from older folk. Never said it myself. Thought it was probably a mining thing, which might have some truth though maybe Viking origins:

“Marra, as a slang word for a mate, derives from a local pronunciation of marrow, which has been used to mean “companion” or “workmate” since the 1400s. No one really knows where the word comes from, but it's possible that it might be related to an old Scandinavian word meaning “friendly” or “outgoing”.”

Same here. My dad always said it was mackem. But have often heard Ashington types saying it

Feels like they’ve claimed it but it was more of an all over north eastern saying at one point I reckon.

Certainly was. Remember it well from 70s and 80s.

Heard it a lot in Cumbria when I lived there too. Was more common the further west you went.

Definitely.

I've lived in Carlisle for the majority of the last 50 years and I've only ever associated the word marra with West Cumbrians.

Even raving/djing up and down the country for many years, whenever mentioning Cumbria, I'd always get marra comments.

That's a very significant quote. It does tie in with what so many of us thought at the end of last season, that we might not make a ton of signings this summer, but they would all be high quality.

I agree.

It was almost like if we can't get a 40/50m ST or RW then I'll use that money to get a top notch midfielder.

It ties in with the "we'll get the right player at the right price" line.

This is exactly what I want like. Growing our team with quality players is more important than finishing in an upper mid-table position over a mid-table one.

Along with the top notch CB.

Marra is an entry in Northumberland words, A glossary of words used in the County of  Northumberland and on the Tyneside by the Rd Oliver Heslop 1983-94.

Marrow, Marra, a comrade, a close friend, a workfellow, one of a pair of things, an equal.

‘Former Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard, 29, is considering a move to Saudi Arabia where he could earn £10m per year. The England player's United contract expired last month.”…….Probably bollocks, but an interesting way of getting Lingard without paying all his wages….Whichever club he might go to in SA, then loans him to us whilst paying some of his wages…..perhaps a swop loan with gayle?[emoji38]
