The idea he couldn’t feature for Man City when Kovacic so often does, it’s not for me, Bruno had a poor game, it happens, he is still a fantastic player who we would expect a fortune for if he was sold.

I don’t have any issues with him as Captain either

I think there is way too much pressure on him to do it all. Our recruitment has been criminal to have a team with such little passing ability.

Underperformed this season.

Highest % of forward passes in the league if I remember correctly. I think it’s what’s in front of him that’s been the problem

He has been below par this season. But I don’t think he’s been as bad as people have made out.

He was dreadful yesterday, mind. Most of his forward passes seemed like they were straight to a Palace player. When it wasn’t even a hard ball to play. Especially for someone as good as him.

Like the rest of our team. He seemed to panic and struggle with his attacking passes. Moving him further forward didn’t help us yesterday. Even though Tonali was our best player by a country mile in the deeper role. His lack of mobility certainly stood out on the right. Perhaps why Howe has been so reluctant to play him there in this system?

our record without him is awful and shows his importance to the team, so by the same measure it makes sense that our performances are poor when he’s playing badly. Needs to buck his ideas up tbh, he’s supposed to be the leader of the team now.

I said it at the time but I think the whole captaincy thing in the summer was a mess and not something I’d expect to see at a top or well run club. I’m not really convinced he has the captain mentality but aside from that I don’t think it’s helped Bruno, and it’s certainly not helped Trippier or the rest of the team. Trippier and Lascelles’ contracts are up at the end of the season, it would’ve been so much better and more natural to have just made the leadership changes then. Can only speculate but the forced nature of it comes across like it was a stipulation of his contract talks.

Does anybody on here watch him regularly for Brazil? I know @Flip used to keep us updated but I don't recall seeing him post much these days.

Just wondering if he's as popular with Brazil fans as he is at Newcastle. I know they didn't rate Joelinton much as a midfielder after a couple of sloppy performances.

Can’t see any way they promised him the captaincy just for his contract. They might have thought Trippier was on the way out and we needed a passionate captain who loves the club and plays every game.

If they thought Trippier was on his away out in the summer then just… promote Bruno after he’s gone?

And even if not, just let Bruno be the third choice captain after Lascelles and Trippier. I think that’s what I’d expect any club to do normally. It just seemed like a really weird thing to do and I’ve never seen it before apart from when a club’s changed manager or something.

I don’t think he’s that famous in Brazil, but don’t know about dedicated national team fans.

He plays for their national side doesn't he? I would think he's pretty famous then.

Definitely not as popular as he’s been for Newcastle. Quite criticized lately tbh. He’s been quite hit and miss for the national team. I expected more from him, not sure he has developed much lately and seems to have the same errors in him as he had two-three years ago.

Is any of that criticism ever directed at his lack of pace or is that not as much of a factor outside of English football?

You know what I mean though, he’s not a star player.

Honestly I thought playing as a midfield anchor he would be a star player. But then I don't really know where he plays for Brazil or even if he's a regular tbh.

Brazil are going through a rough patch at the moment and he’s labeled as one of their “ordinary players”. I’ve watched him for Brazil. Looks like he’s pretty much instructed to fetch the ball back and pass to one of their more decisive players. But he has started 80-90% of their games in the last two years. World Cups, Copas, friendlies.

edit: not Word Cup, was a sub there, Fred and Paqueta were preferred.

Would be silly to give the captaincy from one bench warmer to another ;)

When Tonali played centrally it was a glimpse into why Howe won’t start Bruno anywhere but #6 in this formation, I’ve pointed out before that I don’t think he is physically capable for the further forward role in our current system and I won’t change my mind.

I didn't even know he was on the pitch until about the 25th minute.  Even then I only noticed because he dropped another bollock by losing the ball.  He's having a nightmare season so far.  I'll bite my tongue in case I say too much.

Bruno is an excellent footballer so shite for him means he’s performing like a bang-average PL footballer.

But by his standards he’s been shite.

He's been nowhere near bang average.  He's been awful most of the season ......... oh shit, I said that I would bite my tongue.
