Matt Targett set to miss remainder of season with hamstring injury (Howe)

I'd keep him in too with view to him starting the Arsenal game the week after bearing in mind what Saka did to Burn down there.

Agreed if Howe is genuinely open to starting him against Arsenal. Otherwise, I'd guess I'd rather just cut to the chase and do whatever is best for keeping Burn sharp for the rest of this season...

He’s unbelievably average. The bench is the best thing to ever happen to him reputationally, but people seem to have it in for Burn.

I would say something but looks like I've been well and truly beaten to it by everyone else.

His distribution is better than Burn's and he will at least potentially put a cross in now and again from open play. He also offers a left foot set piece option which mixes things up.

I do think there's things Burn offers that he doesn't IE aerially defensively and in terms of character/aggression for certain occasions. But personally I prefer Targett as a footballer.

There's no doubt both are probably midtable players though.

I don't think we lose anything defensively by playing Targett. We were rock solid last season when we signed him (City and Spurs apart) and his aerial stats last season weren't that far off Burn's this season.

Ideal world next season though, Burn is Botman's back up and Targett is cover for a new LB.

I’m generally a fan of Targett, think he should get game time and I think he was more rusty than bad but Howay he was given a torrid time on Thursday and we looked so much more solid when he was hooked and we brought Burn on and to say otherwise is just revisionism.

You can't say Targett had a "torrid time" and then accuse other people of revisionism, howay . Are you just letting that one moment with Iwobi cloud your judgement?

 Right?

He got merked. That’s a fact.

But he’s 100x the LB that Dan Burn is.

Yeah, his passing was precise and quick.  Notably better than Burn.

People will remember that one incident where he got bodied and that will end up being what is focused on.

He did a lot right yesterday.  Wasn't a bad performance, at all.

Forgot about him getting bodied.

There was 2-3 times he was absolutely nowhere near the attackers down his wing as well. One of them luckily it was offside. Burn would have been absolutely shit on for those.

It's mad how differently people can perceive football. Dan Burn has been an ever present at left back in the best defence in the league this season, but Matty Targett is "100x" the left back he is? If that's true then Howe must be a bit of a clown. Utterly mental.

edit - fucking hell, just reading back and saw one of you claim the first goal doesn't happen with Burn because he wouldn't have made the utterly unremarkable first time pass that Targett did. When literally two of our four goals involved (also unremarkable) first time passes from Burn. Very odd stuff.

Not an issue though as Howe knows the score and Targett will never be a regular starter over a fit Burn.

I’m not convinced personally, we have far less depth in quality at CB/RB.

Obviously Targett may not be happy playing second fiddle and want to move, in that case we will.

We’ve four CBs who Howe trusts. I think LB will be a priority/nailed on signing, but mainly for tactical/flexibility reasons rather than lack of quality or trust in the options we have.

Just look at the table. We’ve only conceded 26 goals. 12 less than Arsenal (and 3 less than Man City). Any angsting over our defensive quality, at LB or anywhere else, seems ridiculous in that context.

Agree. At RB we’ve already bought Trippier’s understudy and backup in Kraft and Manquillo.

Be absolutely amazed if Ashby is anywhere good enough to be a understudy for Trippier. Send him out on loan in the summer. Krafth and Manq might be enough for the time being, but I really want a new, young RB to compete with Tripps.

The missing context is though that our first choice back 4 have been very fortunate with injuries so far. Next season we might not get so lucky, Botman/Schar to Lascelles or Trips to Manquillo is a massive step down in quality. Where as on the left you have pretty solid quality and consistency in who comes in should Burn or Targett go down for any lengthy period.

You have a point on tactical flexibility, an attack minded LB would be covered well by Joe on that left side. Having said that I just can’t see Burn being replaced as first choice LB this summer, he’s consistently performing well enough that replacing him at the moment just isn’t Howes modus operandi.

I agree the position is an issue in the mid term, but short term (1 more season) I think we are okay there. Having said that, if a long term LB target becomes available for the right price there’s every chance we pull the trigger this summer. I just feel the priorities are elsewhere first and foremost.

Courtesy of Lee Ryder…”Eddie Howe says that Matt Targett has nothing to prove to him after his superb pre-season form has put him on the brink of winning back his first-team place.”

Superb? Really? I've not seen a lot of pre-season minutes, but that's Ryder being Ryder right?

Think Howe’s just building his confidence back up, in the knowledge that Targett will have a lot more game time this season

If Schar's not fully fit for Villa it'll be interesting whether we go Lascelles or Burn centre-back. Could be Targett's path back into it.

Anddddd scene.

I'm not coming at this from a Targett hater angle mate just curious where the truth lies between the Ryder comment and the rest of the stuff I've read online that's not exactly in agreement.

Some people have weirdly taken against Targett. I think he’s been solid, if unspectacular, in pre-season.

When was the last time he had a sustained run of games following his injury? I think he’ll be fine this season with a few PL games under his belt. We’re gonna need him.

Fucking hell we better hope not. I don’t think he’s abject but better players will eat him for breakfast.
