Stanley Matthews

I consider this a personal attack on my grandfather...I was writing this last night !!!

My grandfather escaped from the fascists in 1937 and took refuge in London returning to Italy only in 1959... no one in my family ever understood why he became a Villa fanatic while living in London.

His sister laughingly said that he was probably screwing a whore from Birmingham, he replied that in England he only loved Stanley Matthews... he was so crazy that he often went from London to Blackpool to watch him play.

Jokes aside... he'd seen thousands of matches in his life and knew a thing or two about football; he told me that Matthews was not only the best English player ever but also among the best in the world. He said that the only players better than him were Pelé, Di Stefano and Meazza.

If you want a Newcastle player id say Ginola. We had the best of him and he's forever entwined with the entertainers but his career was nowhere near what it should have been. His image, the fact he scored the odd breathtaking goal and he went on to play for media darlings Spurs meant he had such a high profile. Ruel Fox had more career assists.

Drogba for Marseille was the first time I remember any one player ever taking us apart single handedly. He was an outstanding player, criminally underrated if anything

I’m sure I heard recently he scored in 9 finals out of the 9 he played in, or something similar. Outrageous for such an unselfish forward. Big game player who completely changed the perception of the role of an EPL striker, as someone else said.

Richarlison. Never saw the hype and he was dog shit again on Wednesday.

Injuries have taken their toll but I would say he's more underrated than overrated. Versatile, passionate and a good lad. Everton Richarlison would've been an absolute beast in a Howe team.

Just the opposite with us now. If anything Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko are underrated. ;)

Really? Pretty much everyone I speak to say how good Cunha and Mbeumo are? Both have always been fairly highly rated on here, too? Well, they were. But they probably get loads of stick now due to the club they are at. Quite right and all

Sesko has looked far more neat and tidy the last two times I’ve seen him. Not sure a £70m striker who has regularly looked invisible is underrated, mind.

Usual caveats of he is still young, you watch him more than me etc.

Peter Shilton. At his seventies peak he was tremendous but played for England 10 years too long.

Arguably got England knocked out of three different WCs by being shite at the wrong moment.  Clough thought he was great of course, and who am I to argue - but Shilton to me is proof and ne plus ultra that the English have long overrated their own goalkeepers.

Another barrel scraper but I always thought Adam Lallana was wildly overrated, never saw it with him at all but knew a few who thought he was Barcelona/Real Madrid level when he was at the scousers, thought he was crap and did very well to have the career he had for such a basic player

Dennis Bergkamp. A poor version of Beardsley.

Also Bergkamp for me. A really good player, obviously scored some world class goals, but was great for a short period in late 90s. Before and after he didn’t reach those levels, yet people talk like he’s an all time Premier League great.

I don't see any way he's not a PL great like

He's one of the most talented players ever to play here and scored some absolutely ridiculous goals.

Yeah maybe not for 10 years, but who does.

Eden Hazard - Technically brilliant obviously, but flattered to deceive for most of his career and barely showed up in the huge games. His best ever big game performance for Chelsea was probably against a Man City team that were playing Demichelis in midfield which kinda says it all.

To compare him to another Chelsea player in this thread in Didier Drogba who was a monster in big games, Hazard was basically everything he wasn’t from a mentality POV.

I waited years for his impact to match his ability and reputation but it never actually happened.

Bergkamp absolutely is a PL great, the guy was an artist on a football pitch. I wish there were more players like him in the game today that are graceful, instead of the proliferation of physical monsters that we have.
