Dalglish’s time here is an odd one to me looking at his time here (as someone who wasn’t alive during it  ), after Robson turned it down, surely he was the most logical replacement for Keegan? Only manager besides Ferguson to win the PL title which was with Shearer & Batty at Blackburn, romantics about succeeding Keegan in some form again. His success at Liverpool and Blackburn as manager also.

Though he did destroy that side and spent more than he recouped attempting to fix his mistakes in the transfer market. 2nd to 13th (which I believe in 1997-98 a season where we were unthinkably looking over our shoulders until we beat Barnsley in April) is honking. Despite in 1996-97 when he had Keegan’s team, we did quite well in the league under him on the face of it; only lost 2 games and secured 2nd and CL football despite being ravaged by injuries at one point. Great and memorable wins against Forest, Leicester, away at Arsenal.

Plus with the club being floated on the stock market, Ginola publicly asking to leave in March ‘97 and the age of quite a few players in Keegan’s team seem to be things out of his hands? Fascinated in how it went so badly wrong, and why the hell he thought bringing a geriatric Rush and past it Barnes in was a good idea with selling Ferdinand. Shearer’s injury had much to do with that I suppose.

His first bit of transfer business was to sell David Ginola for 2 million pounds and replacing him with Des Hamilton who cost 2.2 million pounds.  That alone deserved the sack!

Oh and this is only my opinion, Ian Rush was one of the worst strikers that I've seen in a black & white shirt. If not the worst and I've seen a few believe me.

Spot on Rod. That first summer was a hatchet job and a half.

Dreadful replacement but Ginola publicly asked to leave in March 97.

I’ve watched most of the 97/98 season on vhs this week (that is my video being quoted above) and I fucking hate the bloke. Yes, there were circumstances - we had little money, the squad was ageing, Shearer got injured and so on. But he set the team up so negatively, he even said he was happy with a draw at Stevenage. He was lucky Barnes played as well as he did because Rush was tragic. But even off the pitch, I don’t feel like he was ever really into it. He was also the polar opposite of KK, I mean look at this and contrast it to how full of beans Keegan was unveiling Warren Barton

Also some Stevenage stuff:

I know the narrative was Bobby turned us down but on the day Keegan left, Dalglish was odds on with the bookies. He was definitely first choice in my view.

Because Dalglish wasn't playing him, he didn't like him from day one. Ginola had turned down Barcelona only 6 months earlier to stay at Newcastle.
