He's playing because Howe is unflinchingly loyal to his leadership group IMO. Plus if he drops Pope it could affect his England prospects, Pope was waxing lyrical about how Tuchel had been in regular touch with him about the World Cup right before the West Ham game, where he dropped at least one clanger.

The CL was the perfect game to rotate him without making it look like he'd been dropped, now I think he stays in the side just to preserve his reputation.

That's not to say he's a bad keeper either, but neither is Ramsdale, and we are paying good money for him to be here on loan which is going to cost us £25m if we keep him on. What is he supposed to think when Pope keeps getting picked regardless of how many times he fucks up?

I know Howe is accused of having his favourites, not being ruthless enough and sticking by those he trusts.  The latter isn't necessarily always a bad thing.

But I just can't have it that he is worrying about any of the above.  How it is perceived, his England chances, him being in the leadership group, his reputation.  It's elite level sport and Pope has been making mistakes that are costing us goals and results on a regular basis of late.  He won't just be in the side so Howe doesn't hurt his feelings.

Also, I didn't realise that the option on Ramsdale was £25m!  We better start playing him to see if he is worth it or not.  If he can't get a game and a chance over Pope now.  Then he may as well go back to Southampton early.

Well it's the same guy who was trying to keep Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett around on contracts long past their sell by dates.

Pope needs to be taken out of the firing line for his own sake, seems a bit shot at the moment, much like after the sending off against Liverpool. He also needs to know hes not automatically No.1 and be made to fight to get his place back. I have no doubt hes still a class keeper, he just needs a bit of a shake up.

I'm still totally non-plussed as to wtf he thought he was doing on Tuesday? I've never seen anything like it since he did it last time.

He probably took inspiration from the Marseille keeper's name - GERONIMOOOOOOO

Wonder what he’s shouting there. “Ahhhhhh shitting shit” or maybe “Please stop” or could it be “It was at this moment that I knew I’d fucked up”

Botman got dropped for a few iffy games so pope should aswell if that's how it works in howes management.

If not then it comes down to favouritism.

Or he just rates Pope higher than Ramsdale even with the odd clanger.

Not sure what that says about Ramsdale, but don't see how you can come to any other conclusion.

He was yelling at the striker to try and put him off..... didn't work though

Well we gathered that, definitely didn't think he was shouting encouragment at him.
