I keep hearing how much more room to spend Liverpool have and their interest in Isak.

But when you think about it, all they did was let Newcastle know informally that they'd be willing to pay £120 million for Isak. Never followed up with an actual bid, or looked to entice Newcastle with any indication of an increased offer of any kind.

They seemed to then move on to Ekitike pretty quickly, even though there was no real pressure to do so, as they could have left that hanging for a while, and dangled that over Newcastle while trying to convince them to accept a deal for Isak.

The sudden noise about Saudi interest as soon as Liverpool had signed Ekitike and so looked less likely to sign Isak was also a bit suspicious too.

Also if there was any real indication out there that Isak could be had this summer, would Arsenal not have enquired as well or put out some noise too regarding their interest?

There's a chance we have flat out refused to sell and clubs know this, and a lot of this noise is agent driven to put on added pressure regarding an improved contract.

I don't think we've heard the last from Liverpool.

When they finally flog Nuñez, probably to one of our Saudi overlords and they turn up to our door flush with cash and could go beyond 150m (if that even is the figure we're holding out for) then we have a decision to make.

The way this summer has panned out, I wouldn't trust our custodians to decide what to have for breakfast let alone what to do.with the world's best striker.

This is what I’ve been saying. If Isak was on strike pending a move I feel like it would be a very specific move that had already been reported. Which it hasn’t been.

It’s odd like.

Whichever way this falls out, I’ll be disappointed if PIF don’t react in someway. They don’t say much but this is a situation where some words on the direction of travel would be useful.

"PIF congratulates Newcastle United on the club's historic victory in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium, London." After the game the Newcastle chairman Al-Rumayyan had said: "That's the first - and it's not going to be the last."

we have to keep him and offer him the money, not least because the striker market is completely dry - especially after we’ve missed out on 3 or 4 targets there already. We will really struggle without his goals.

only Tonali comes close to justifying wanting some kind of parity with Isak on wages at the moment imo.

How would you fix it? I don't think a 200k/week contract is going to do it if Liverpool can offer 300k.

I thought it was reported that Yasir had already stepped in and said Isak wasn’t for sale? I guess not directly to the fans, but he seems to know what’s going on.

Not entirely but we shouldn’t even allow him to speak to Liverpool and we don’t have to absolutely match their offer. He must understand where we’re at and that there’s 3 years left on his deal.

What are they?

I think PIF are demanding immediate success (European qualification) and Howe thinks the best way to secure that is to go for Prem proven players are super premium targets.

I said this last season with the Guehi chase. I think Howe was a lot closer to losing his job for finishing 7th than he should’ve been. He doesn’t want to take risks in the transfer market.

You can’t spend £30m on 19 year olds when you need immediate success.

Yeah I agree, but you’re not saying this is Howe’s fault are you? For me it’s just a fact of the level of player we need to get where we want to go.

Why didn't they put a bid in then? They were also only £30 million short of the fee most expect Newcastle to consider. Did they really need a bunch of sales first before offering that? Something weird about this whole thing.

if this all ends up Isak gets a new deal I’ll be relieved.

They stopped classes for this at my school and let us listen to it on the radio. Epic times.

Our secretary came running down the corridor and burst in the class "Newcastle have sold Andy Cole!"

I can just remember being massively fucked off for the rest of the day.

No it’s not his fault.  There should be a larger strategy as to how we get to the top - and that doesn’t include primarily buying established PL players.

The approach is wrong imo. I’ve always felt it’s wrong. But Howe shouldn’t determine the strategy and he’s not at fault for our financial limitations. PIF should be working faster to alleviate financial limitations and put in a structure to get Howe quality players.

In absence of that we have this shitshow.

They can "offer" what they like but he only gets it if we agree to sell him. He can't just walk out.

He's got three years left, yes we risk losing him for less if he doesn't sign a new deal but that isn't without risk for him either. What if he has a season plagued with injury and/or patchy form? Is he still walking into a £300k/week contract or will the big boys have a different shiny new toy to target? If he turns down an extra £100k/week here that's over £15m guaranteed he's leaving on the table, in the hope that both someone offers us what we want plus the massive salary he apparently wants.
