I just don't have any faith in him as a person. Howe could have just sensibly assumed (Like we all did) that the season caught up with him.

Not saying Shearer has skills of perception similar to Sherlock Homes, Hannibal Lecter or Gregory House - but he was saying on the Rest is Football podcast that Isak seemed like a very decent guy when he met him and he was a "manager's dream". Until this latest saga he has come across quite well.

Something happened.

Yes, his agent said I can get you a move to Liverpool, on double the money and where you can win the league this season, you just have to behave really badly. It’s not hard to solve this mystery

That would make Howe the mug for starting him surely?

These lads are monitored in the minutest detail, if he was purposefully "off" it would stick out like a sore thumb in the performance data.

The video by that The Noise guy dismisses several possible factors, but essentially says that the biggest toys started flying out of the pram when Ekitike was reportedly handed 250k a week by Liverpool.

We had supposedly already settled personal terms with Ekitike, so this means either Liverpool are mugs and are paying him too much or this 250k story is untrue. Note that Sky reported it, not one of the websites. We would not pay 250k for an untested player, even a record signing. PSR tells us that. It also means that it is stupid to blame Andy Howe or Reuben or whoever for Ekitike because we were never getting him as soon as 250k a week from someone else entered the picture.

There is a decent risk Ekitike will miss as many chances as Nunez in the Premier League, so such wages are crazy. Its more than they are supposedly giving Wirtz.

I'd be astonished if Ekitike is being paid 250k a week. Sounds like bullshit tbh.

Good video on transfer news in general.

Good video but my problem would be (a) the fact that he just accepts that journalists are OK just to act as mouthpieces for whoever passes them some propaganda and (b) excusing the actions of players because it’s OK to just go after money by whatever means necessary.

So he’s described the situation in a factual way but it doesn’t really address whether anyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

At what point do Liverpool look elsewhere?

They could potentially come unstuck if they go with what they currently have attack wise, so they will need to move on soon, or find a stopgap.

This could also be a potential problem for us. They will sign another striker IMO, might well step on our toes again.

Cleary also clearly ignores the direct incentives to manipulate the truth. 'I'm mates with journalists and all they do is pass on the info they are given' is the most outdated view of journalism in 2025 its possible to make. In football circles, as he himself explains, the journalists are part of the process and financial model so Cleary's view, whilst helpful and informative, does not address the fundamental incentives behind the modern business model of reporting on transfers.

My biggest problem with that video is how he ends it off with:  "I think Isak WILL go to Liverpool.  And I will wish him all the best.  And I think you should too"

Nah mate,  I''ll stick with wishing the utter cunt nothing but the worst, thanks.

I guess he says that they pass on info because it generates engagement and therefore money. But not sure how you can be ‘legit’, things you tweet can be relied on when you also make no effort to establish or describe the truth.

As I said, he’s describing the facts of the situation but avoids addressing why it’s so shite and the question of whether it actually could be better.

Wonder how scorn the Newcastle football manager scout will be feeling. Will his personality be adjusted from fairly ambitious to ambitious, or will it go all the way to fickle or mercenary?

Absolutely, the financial incentives are not aligned with truth telling. They are aligned with engagement and clicks. The incentive to click is aligned with negative emotions. Thats why its shite.

I have a Liverpool supporting friend who messaged me in all seriousness and said "Yep and how easy would it have been for toon to take £110m and go looking for a striker with money in the bank "

Deluded beyond belief.
