Great for Villa, obviously, and they were former European Champions (although you'd have to be at least 50 to remember it), and obviously still a long way to go in terms of the tie and the competition, but it would kind of make a mockery of European football if Villa did go on to win the tournament this year - it would be the same had we won last year (from a neutral perspective, not ours), and Forest next year. The idea would be to keep improving, keep qualifying for it, keep building, keep growing your brand etc. and in time challenge for it, but if a team wins it after not even being in the tournament for 40 years would be a massive damp squib, particularly for similar sized clubs like ourselves. Hard to explain in writing, but I know what I meanĀ

Anyway, they've equalised in the time that took to write out.

Want to start teams like us believing it can be done. This is properly and hopefully soon becoming an era where "super teams" are a thing of the past. The advancements of management, scouting and player development hopefully ending the stranglehold by the same clubs.Ā

At least Porto are in the tournament pretty much every season and often win their league, that's obviously helped by the standard of the rest of the division, but still. A non 'top' club, literally never been in the European Cup / Champions League for 43 years, likely to finish 7th in their domestic league this year, but then win it. Of course we as fans would love it if we won next year, but it wouldn't be great for the vast majority of football fans having such a random winner who barely ever compete in it.

Would have been one of the best goals of all time, let alone goal of the season

Wey nar. Would have basically been the same as Joelintonā€™s vs. Villa on Boxing Day with an added ZidaneĀ pirouette.Ā
