By the same criteria, what were our good performances this year in the Champions League? Evidently none of the victories, which all came against meaningless opposition, nor the draw against Leverkusen who are one place above Freiburg in the Bundesliga. I guess the 1-1 draw in a virtually meaningless tie against PSG? Or are we still waiting for our commemorative shirts and DVDs for being totally annihilated by Barcelona but almost matching them for the first three-quarters?

Pretty much. Aside from one marginal underachievement against Marseille and one marginal overachievement against PSG, we basically just achieved par in the CL. (Obviously I'm only counting the result against Barcelona, rather than the manner of defeat...)

The wins against USG, Benfica, Bilbao, PSV and Qarabag were all fun on the night but they were complete mismatches and we (a pretty average PL outfit) steam-rollered every one. They were hardly Barca '97/PSG '23.

Both comps are the English clubs cups to lose. They're going to have to change the rules or formats to change that.

I'd imagine UEFA won't be at all happy if English clubs enjoy a consistent stranglehold on all 3 comps. But again, it shows where all the money is going.

Isn't there some crazy stat that English teams have won like 20/20 play off games against non English competition in the EL/Conference League play offs now?

With begrudging fairness to the PL, all it's done is establish itself as the pinnacle of the club game. Europe needs to get it's shit in order to catch up.

Fuck knows how. I worry it'll only be possible if something goes wrong here.

... Like completely self-terminating it's glorious reputation by retrospectively stripping one of it's most successful clubs of several titles due to 115 cases of cheating.

Perhaps if the Euro giants actually shared some of the revenue about in their respective leagues they may have some actual depth. Instead Bayern, PSG, Real, Barca and Inter just monopolise and dominate.

Probably been said already but Europa League is nowhere near as difficult to win without the Champions League dropouts anymore

Champions League drop outs into the UEFA/Europa was a sham anyway.

While this is a fair point. The English Premier League is doing exactly the same, just they get a far bigger pie, so even the smaller pieces are bigger than anything distributed around Europe.

Not allowing investment in clubs has cut off the only chance.

Slightly dated stats but:

EPL distribution is the most equitable with the top club earning only 1.6 times the bottom club.

One of the main drivers for increased competitive balance and maintaining the attractiveness of the overall league product is ensuring that outcomes and results are as uncertain as possible. That is part of the reason why La Liga, with its two historically dominant clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona, decided to change their revenue distribution structures (by agreeing to move to a collective broadcasting agreement) to make the league more attractive and (in time) increase the competitive balance across the league.

Nonetheless, at present, La Liga has the highest top to bottom club revenue ratio at 3.6. Serie A is 2.3 and Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga are 3.3.

What Villa have done well is managing being in the Europa and keeping some form in the PL

Because you can play your strongest team in the premier league and then some squad players in most of the europa games

What an awful season. If Palace win and Spurs stay up I'm going to need a blow to the head.

Potentially 3 trophies in 2 season for Palace. Who would have predicted that. I thought we'd be the exception in breaking the trophy barrier dominated by the superleague clubs, but it's looking fairly routine right now. Europa League would have been brilliant for us next season.

I think we achieved more in the CL this season than Villa have in the Europa with our performances against top class sides.
