Sometimes I wonder if it’s just me getting older and transitioning into that timeworn classic of thinking things used to be better. However, I’ve never enjoyed watching football less than this current era. Not talking just about Newcastle but the whole game, VAR, the off-the-pitch influences, how refereeing has gotten worse over time, teams setting up in exactly the same overcoached ways and players being taught to be robotic rather than use any individual flair. Sparta were 3-1 up then Van Persie brought his own son on from the bench. Now the pendulum has swung and it’s considered the epitome of the successful modern team. It’s fucking rank. Add in VAR, PSR, Ballots, Bots, sky high ticket prices, shit kick off times yadda yadda yadda and the game has become a toxic soup. Fatigue from fixture congestion, a focus on fitness over technique (which has levelled the playing field considerably) and the reinvention of set plays has made the average game that much more dour IMO.
