Newcastle United 4-0 Aston Villa (29/10/2022)

I take my 7 year old son into the Gallowgate. I have to say quite often the people around me tone their language down and usually go out of their way to make him feel welcome. Quite often people come and give him a flag etc.

I don’t swear when he’s there but also I think some exposure to swearing is good because I can then influence him in terms of him knowing what he can or can’t say etc.

The old fella next to us the other day at the Villa game was even singing “Bruno’s flipping magic…”

There is some middle ground here lol I swear a lot but in a crowded public space with kids about it is reasonable that while you may judge it fine for your kids to be around that language your standards aren't everyones standards so is perfectly reasonable that you are expected to moderate it somewhat, and also it is possible to be overreacting to some colourful language and get in a moral panic about it.

The family section as it stands isn't much of a family section... There's plenty of naughty language there, if that's the concern. It's also in a relatively crap part of the ground if you want to see other aspects of the game.

Just find it ironic that a woman feeling excluded from 90% of a ground because it's a passionate sport isn't a problem, but the blind feeling excluded from the finer points of a visual depiction is!

I think you have more autonomy over whether you feel excluded by the use of language that comes with the territory and literally not being able to see something because you're blind like

It's 2022.

Anyone who's offended by 'swear words' is...

Very easy to spin both ways.

I'm not offended. I couldn't give a fuck you daft cunt.

Still stands tho. If you can't or won't moderate your language in public you're a bit of a cock, imho, obvs 😉

Such a stereotypical working class sport. Needs changes like warning/bans for foul language in and around the ground. I’d also ban alcohol in the ground and maybe give stewards the power to refuse entry if they believe an individual has imbibed excessive amounts of alcohol prior to trying to enter the ground.
A crowd similar to The Voice or Strictly would be far less intimidating.

Yeah, but being excluded from seeing a picture goes with the territory when you're blind, right? Which is what we're discussing. You want to change imagery to adjust the territory blind people want to engage with, but don't want people to adjust the territory women want to engage with.

I feel like you'd have a different attitude to this if someone was calling a footballer a black bastard.

I can and I think most people do. I wouldn't count a football match as one of the places where you moderate it though.

Nah it's for visually impared people and it's not the sole reason, there are plenty of other reasons to as well, none of which exclude anyone. Being fully blind is different obviously, but there are ways to make things accessible that crucially don't exclude other people by doing so. That's the difference.

Swearing might be excluding someone who if they're an adult, imo, need to get a grip, but if you stopped swearing from being allowed in stadiums you'd be excluding plenty of people in doing so. That's the difference. It's like the people who move in next to a music venue then petition to get it closed, it's exactly the same principle. You go to the match, you go in with your eyes open to an extent.

And yes, of course I'd have a different attitude, as would most people I would hope. Unless you're equating swearwords with racist abuse, I dunno what you're getting at though.

What a game this was for us. 10 people from Newcastle United Denmark travelled to the game. Personally it was my 21th Newcastle game on stadium. Stadium tour friday, the match on saturday and sunday we were lucky enough to visit Joelinton at his house. After the game he took our flag down to the dressing room where it was signed by all the players. The next day we picked up the flag at his house, got signed our shirts, flags, match programmes and stuff like that, photos. He's just a class act, on and off the pitch. Will never forget this trip and I can't wait to visit again. 2 of the guys travelling with us had never seen Newcastle live before, they were speechless.

Joe talks a bit about it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCvukpLpipI

It still irks me thinking about the time I was calling Howard Webb a cunt and the old bloke in front of me randomly started having a go at me for it and saying it offended his wife. Without even thinking about it I apologised and it still annoys me that I didn't tell him and his wife to fuck off.

One of those situations you think about in the shower and wish you could re-do.

Keep an eye on the obituaries and settle the score, iyam.

Think I was in my in my teens until I realised the Mirandinha song ended with 'he's fucking brill'. Dad used to sing 'and he is brill' around me.

I love belting out a string of swear words at a match, nothing fucking like it. Can't beat the emotion a match drags out of you.

Aye, absolute seething rage at the opposition doing a cynical foul that would get a round of applause if we done it to them... nowt like it man

That's fantastic! Funnily enough, I recall watching the match cam video put out by the club and Joe was on there taking a red flag from someone in the crowd at the end. I wondered what that was about, now I know

"Northern Denmark" tickled me a bit when you can throw a rock from one end of the country to the other

Amazing experience for all of you!

Haha true, we're just a few fans from this part of the country, watching the games together and travelling together. So we got the idea of the flag :)

That Denmark visit is class. What an awesome experience!

In regard to what you can and can't say at a match, with enough varied intonation you only need to say "Howay!"

An example:

(At the ref) Howay!

(At the lads) Howay!

See? Completely different.
