When Souness said he was swimming the channel and I donated a pony, I didn't think he was just doing a couple of hours in a relay...

I feel short changed to be honest

Wonder if all this crazy spending by the Saudi clubs continues it could have a big effect on FFP in the Premier League? They could distort the market so much that even average players could cost £50m which would price out so many clubs. If clubs can only spend around 100m a season then the league wont be able to bring in so many quality players. Interesting times

Community Shield moved back to 4pm KO. Power to the people but still just a half measure in reality.

Can’t think of the Community Shield now without thinking of Griezmann being absolutely buzzing at winning it with us a few times on his Football Manager save.

David Craig stays.  Presumably Sky are playing the long game and are going to cash in on some sweet ivory when the time comes.

Sky basically ditching traditional journalism in favour of “personalities” and one time fees for Ornstein and the like on their panel shows.

Horrible for those cut loose, but not a huge surprise.

I had Talksport on in the car on my way to work yesterday (I know, but I'd rather listen to football shite than baseball or US politics on the radio here), but Agbonlahor was asked what the biggest thing he'd ever got wrong as a pundit, and he admitted that it was saying someone would rather play for Brentford for half the money than play for us. About 12:13 in: https://talksport.com/radio/listen-again/1687273200/1687282200/

Excellent write-up from Michael Cox re this utterly tedious craic.

All this is very peculiar considering there’s an absolute deluge of fan-driven content online these days, particularly in video format. But television, rather than attempting to provide an alternative to that noise, is trying to replicate it. It genuinely feels like broadcasters who pay billions for the rights to show Premier League matches have been rattled by the likes of ArsenalFanTV and believe they should use experienced ex-players in a similar way.

Perhaps, just as they’ve largely given up on making football-related shows (Soccer AM, Sunday Supplement and Goals on Sunday are no more), broadcasters have also realised few people want proper analysis of a match. Maybe the objective is now to create short clips that will go viral, and ultimately internet video content is a contest to shout the loudest. Clearly some people enjoy this type of punditry. People certainly engage with it, although much of the engagement is surely people sharing it to say how much they dislike it, or sharing it to wind up other fans. The pundits probably enjoy it too, although that’s inevitable — it’s easier. Analysing a game properly and coming up with original points is difficult; acting like a generic fan requires comparably little effort.
