Scotty66 Posted May 6, 2023 Share Posted May 6, 2023 One thing I've noticed watching all these different teams in top 4 and relegation scenarios over the last week or two is just how electric our football is. Obviously we know it's been good after the dross that Bruce and gang have served up but when you watch other teams playing long balls out of play, taking shots that go out for throw ins, huge errors etc it really hits home just how good Howe has us set up, organised and efficient. GW 2-6 (4 points) GW 3-7 (4 points) GW 20-24 (3 points) GW 21-25 (5 points) Man City & Liverpool just happened to be in all 4 of those sequences. 24/28 five game sequences we've picked up at least 6 points. That is how it felt with Bruno in the cup semi. We were two goals up with time running out in the tie, so it was completely unnecessary. I hope the lesson was learned. I am far more afraid of what we could do to ourselves than any of the teams in the remaining fixtures. If we play with our regular mindset, we'll be fine. We bounced back immediately from Villa, so the evidence says we will bounce back from any bad result and not slip into someone's death spiral fantasy. A win today guarantees 6th (actually a point pretty much guarantees it barring a 27-goal swing in Spurs's final three games). Following Man City's win, we can no longer win the title. This is the way I've always viewed it - each position just closes off at this time of the season. I'll admit that the stress of this is lost on me - we don't even need to hit top form, just average form. If we're a point ahead of Liverpool and Man Utd on the final weekend, then and only then will I feel any stress. Edit: beat Arsenal today - a tough but hardly unlikely outcome (we're marginal favourites with the bookies, or at least we were this morning) and win our game in hand and we'd be closer to 2nd than to 5th. Heron Posted May 7, 2023 Share Posted May 7, 2023 (edited) Just seen that Brighton play Arsenal, us and Villa all away and Man City at home in their remaining 6 fixtures and have to make up 7 points on us assuming they win their game in hand. Even beating us they'd need 4. I heavily, heavily doubt that is happening. Likewise, Spurs would have to overturn a 27 goal deficit and we'd have to lose every game and Spurs win every game for them to catch us now. Realistically, only Liverpool pose a threat. They could (quite conceivably) win their remaining three games. But no chance, we don't get 6 points from our last 5 games like. So get packing folk.
