He seriously needs to improve his striking. Only part of his game that hasn’t improved since we signed him. Has the occasional good effort, but by large it’s still rushed efforts or poor technique. Hopefully it’s something he can improve because rest of his game is great, and his energy gets him into good areas.

A doubt for England according to Hope.

The only doubt should be whether we call the FA tonight or in the morning, give the lad some rest and away for the warm weather training.

And I say that as someone who looks forward to going to watch England and seeing our lads play!

I thought he was thr one negative today. Didn’t cause any problems right or left and was weak/wasteful with the chances that came his way.

Barnes may not be as good as him. But based on this season. His numbers say otherwise and he has been more effective with the time he’s had on the pitch.

I’m sure he will rediscover his form. But he has had more bad games than good so far.

Thought his tracking back and defensive work was class on the breaks.  Don't see Barnes managing that.

The club should make sure he isn't played in both England matches. Would've been better if he'd withdrawn.

You ever thought the lad might want to play and try and cement an England place?
don’t think him playing and improving form is that bad a thing aswell see the euros u21 tournament the summer before last

I'm sure he does, just like all of the other England players that have withdrawn. These are two meaningless matches before the start of a busy winter schedule. I'd prefer him to rest and not risk injury.

Is he getting slagged off?  Or are people just rightly pointing out he hasn't been anywhere near as effective as last season or playing at the same levels?  I thought he was great against Arsenal.  Poor by his standards against Forest.

Seems like he has a bit of a nagging injury and until recently, the team has been below par.  So that would go some way to explaining it.

Thought he was decent against Forest personally.

I have different expectations of him and Barnes.  I don’t expect Gordon to be as ruthless in the final third as Barnes. He’s not consistently shown that ability in his career.  I do think he could be sharper in that area this season. And I expect him to be in position to score more scruffy goals than he has so far.

Barnes is a finisher. He’s ball striking is considerably cleaner.  But I don’t expect the same level of work rate, tracking back, being a constant menace on the ball as Gordon. That’s not his game.

Agree with all of this. Can’t see AG ever making a CF. Have no confidence in his finishing. Maybe he’ll have Bellamy transformation one summer. Actually think he could make a decent 8 as he gets older and fills out a bit.

I think he could be a CF. Hes got the ability to score scruffy goals. Movement and desire is more important than ball striking. When he’s confident he’s a composed finisher.

But I wouldn’t expect him to score the types of goals Barnes scores with the sams level of efficiency.  At least not now.
