Mahoneys Tache
I think we need to be prepared for this being a transitional season with Miley and osula getting more time and GBD finding his feet. Patience. Edited September 25, 2025 by Mahoneys Tache
HawK
I put a post in here a couple of weeks ago stating I couldn't see any improvement from his debut season in the CL compared to this season. The performance he put in last night against Bradford was the step up I was looking for, I've not seen him play that way before against any opposition and I've watched almost every game we've played one way or another that he's played in for us. You don't have to go back too far (Bromley Jan 2025) to see how badly we struggled against lower tier opposition, it's not as easy as you would think, and Miley bossed it. He made mistakes, but he's 19. It's not like this is a seasoned pro with poor decision making, he's got time to learn it. There's a reason you don't see super young players break into first teams very often in GK, CD, CM.. because the mistakes that get made there are critical, highlighted and very consequential. If your new superstar 18yr old winger fails to nutmeg the fall back and it's a turnover, so what. If Miley makes a mistake, it can directly lead to an opportunity for the opposing team. There might have been some tactical tweaks or a word in his ear from Eddie about having a bit more freedom, he certainly looked like he'd been given far more licence to get on the ball deep and dictate play. Some of his first touches and redirections of the ball were outrageous, no exaggeration. I mentioned it in the match thread, but a spot in front of our defence with midfielders ahead of him to play off and through seemed to be the making of him last night. I'd like to see him at the base behind Tonali and Bruno, who know when and how to move forward and cover each other. Being press-resistant in that 6 role will be a massive boon to our defence and playing out from the back and through a high press. As an aside I'm not sure why we seem to be married to this flat 3 in the middle, there's no verticality there or ways to play through teams, little movement or options on the ball. AyeDubbleYoo
Great post, I loved watching him last night. Also without the ball, you could see he's been watching the way Tonali plays and was looking to accelerate early to get in positions to defend well. Hopefully we can learn to pass through the lines against better teams like we did last night, it was the most noticeable thing we were working on IMO. AJ9
The passing through the lines thing was evident from not just Miley but with Botman and Thiaw too. Agree with the idea of him playing the six and Bruno and Tonali as two 8s. Woltemade with that pair will run rings around people. Just need a couple of finishers (Barnes/Wissa) and Tino and Hall to expand the pitch and I think it could be our most balanced and technical 11. Lotus
1 hour ago, The College Dropout said: There was one great tackle by the touch line. He looked better off the ball than he has previously these last two game imo. I don’t think he’ll be trusted as a single pivot in front of a back 4 in PL or CL games mind. But Howe has already surprised me with his willingness to rotate. But he’s doing it in different ways. For me, it's the way Tonali covers the lanes, pressures the ball carrier, reduces the pitch for the ball carrier. We don't ave anyone else who does that even remotely to his standard. Maybe Miley could play alongside Tonali in a double pivot if Bruno's out and we switch to 4231. Wolt as the AM. Anyway, looking forward to seeing Miley develop. KaKa
Miley was unreal in that 6 position over the summer against Espanyol. There was a number of us discussing it in the match thread at the time. Think Howe was impressed by it too, as he's since mainly used him there. Really should continue to focus on mastering that role going forward. His awareness of what is going on around him and his composure on the ball when being closed down suit the position very well. Steve Charlton
Joelinton says it was troubling to see Newcastle United team-mate Lewis Miley "get stick" after a landmark moment, but the Brazilian believes genuine supporters are firmly behind the teenager. Miley chose to limit replies to a post he made on X to mark his 50th first-team game for Newcastle at the weekend. It is understood this was a precaution as he is still young. The 19-year-old put in an accomplished display in the goalless draw against Bournemouth – his first Premier League start since February – but he still came in for criticism from a small minority of social media users who questioned his first-team credentials. Miley's course of action on the social media platform was noticed, and fans have since sent messages of support, while captain Bruno Guimaraes hailed his fellow midfielder as a "top player and guy". Joelinton played alongside academy graduate Miley in Newcastle's 4-1 win against Bradford City on Wednesday night and said the youngster has a "great future in front of him". "It's always difficult when you see your team-mate get stick," Joelinton said following the Carabao Cup third-round tie. "I have had a difficult time here, too. I know how it is. "I know the fans are behind the team and a really good young player. He played really well on Sunday. The team has to get better and everyone has to look on the mirror and get better." Miley praised Newcastle's "amazing" travelling support in his post on Sunday, saying he was "very proud" to have hit the milestone for his boyhood club. The midfielder broke a number of records during a breakout campaign at Newcastle a couple of years ago, including becoming the youngest player in Champions League history to provide an assist for an English side by doing so at the age of 17 years and 226 days. Miley went on to suffer back and foot injuries and has faced intense competition for a starting berth while competing with fellow midfielders Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali. But Miley, tellingly, kept his place in Eddie Howe's starting line-up for the visit of Bradford. "I thought Lewie was excellent," the Newcastle head coach said. "In part, I think he really helped us in the first half. He played some lovely little deft touches and short passes into midfield using Joe and Bruno as a springboard, really, to control that midfield area. "He's come back into the team and produced two really good performances back-to-back. I thought he was really good against Bournemouth in maybe a slightly different way to tonight, but he's developing his experience all the time and I'm really pleased with him." What sort of moron "supporter" logs onto social media to give one of our own players grief after a game? Honestly properly boils my piss some of the idiots that like to think they’re "supporters" He's 19 years old, he's going to have games where he maybe isnt at his best. Its part of the learning process of any footballer.

Durham Mag
The lad is a geordie, he is 19 and a proper talent. It's mental that some (twats) fans are picking the lad apart. Let him play, let him learn, and support him. Surely that gives him the best chance of success. He could be top tier.

Toonjam88
I’ve had to stay away from it all the last few weeks as it has really pissed me off. I know people have their opinions and they are welcome to them but he is 19. Was talking to one bloke yesterday about the match and I said I thought Lewis did well. He was like nah would have dragged him off at halftime he was shit. He said lost the ball too much. I pointed out most of the players did at some point but he wasn’t having it and when I pointed out he is only 19 his reply was well Owen was doing it for England at 19 🤦🏻. its not just Lewis it affects all the negative stuff I know for a fact it affects his family as they shield him from a lot of it. I would love to be a footballer and they get paid a lot of money but I have been shocked by some of the stories his Dad has told me it’s mental. I’m definitely not on the Miley Hype Train but it’s clear he’s talented. I think lots of us got carried away when he broke through and looked so good against PSG and the like. He’s obviously had some fitness issues since then. He does look a little like he’s grown too big too fast and he hasn’t quite realised he could start to muscle blokes around. Anyway, was very happy to see him looking back like his 17 yr old self the other night. Hope him and his family feel protected by the club.

Sounds like you were arguing with someone with an IQ of 50. They can’t distinguish that players develop at different speeds, that Owen comparison is utterly ridiculous. Sadly, you hear it all the time, absolutely whoppers with idiotic opinions. Barca game prime example, a couple of fellas behind me moaned the whole game how shit we were and how Pope basically flapped at Rashfords goals, just absolute zero idea about football which is surprising because they’ve probably sat in those seats for 40 years and watched 1000 of games. nufc4eva
It was the same with Anderson, remember a lot of people saying he wouldn't make it etc. Happened so much over the years where we seem to beat down our own. I wasn't Longstaffs biggest fan by the end and thought he needed to move on so we could improve that area but wanted him to do well every time he played for us. Think people fail to realise with any professional footballer how good they have to be to even breakthrough and I think especially difficult here for a local player where not many do. He's 19, never let anyone down really when coming in the team, had a bad injury that halted his progress and needs minutes to grow his confidence and develop. He's clearly trusted with the ball by all our senior pros and will get plenty of games this year to develop. Needs to trust his own ability and take more risks as we see glimpses of his passing ability and maybe be more aggressive in his play but hopefully that will come. Holloway
Eddie may well have been managing his confidence levels by suggesting he keeps it simple and tidy. He'll be nudging him forward into more expansive play as the season goes on I'd bet
